šŸ† Account Reconciliation - Google Sheets

I think I figured the problem out. The unique identifier is wrong. IDK why it doesn’t match the console, transactions, and balance history - or how to make it. But I suspect that once I fix that, things will work. fingers crossed!

Apparently I spoke prematurely. I still wasn’t able to make it work after resetting the unique identifier, so I deleted the sheet completely and tried to reinstall, but I got the error below. The sheet does install but as ā€œCopy of Account Reconciliationā€ instead of an original and it isn’t finding any data for ā€œtransactions since last reconcileā€ no matter which account or dates I select. There is no other Account Reconciliation sheet in my file. Can someone help. I really loved this solution!

@randy This feels like an issue with Tiller Community Solutions not being able to install properly. @randy, any suggestions on troubleshooting steps to take?

I am able to install, delete and reinstall other tiller community sheets. This is the only one that errors out.

Can you manually rename the sheet to account reconciliation. That is the name the sheet should be and that could be why it’s not working. As @jpfieber mentioned it seems like it is not completely installing.

Thanks for the suggestion. I was able to rename the sheet but it still doesn’t work.

Sorry nothing seems to be working. I think at this point your best bet it to contact support to see if they can see any issues with your sheet. support@tiller.com

they have already passed on the matter, since its related to a community solution.

I DM’d you with a possible alternative…

For anyone facing similar issues, double-check that the ā€˜Enable/Disable’ switch in A5 is set to ā€˜Enable’, otherwise most of the formulas in the sheet won’t work (provided as a way of lowering the templates impact on the spreadsheets performance).

Hello - this sheet looks great. I’m trying to start using ā€œAccount Reconciliationā€, following the setup instructions to being with my most recent account statement. Please forgive my naivete, as I’m new to all of this, and slowly working my way through the Tiller learning curve. The whole spreadsheet world is full of complications for a newbie.

However, columns B, C, D, F, and G are all beige (see screenshot), not green as columns B, C, and D are shown in in the first screenshot on Community Discussion page ( šŸ† Account Reconciliation - Google Sheets ). That means I can’t enter data as directed without breaking the sheet. When I try to do so by using green columns (I, J., L, M) the ending balance in column I shows as red.

I then tried to start with an older statement (December 2025), following the instructions you laid out in comment #62 above to SandyB, on the theory that maybe I needed to use multiple months rather than just one, and then everything would turn green. That didn’t work, however, and it meant the troubleshooting section then showed a mismatch at ending balance. (Maybe when I had initially tried to start with the June 2026 statement, and then manually changed to use the December 2025 instead, that messed things up.)

At this point I rewound the clock to version history just before I tried the first statement, and opted to ask for help.
It seems like those beige columns in B, C, and D are a problem – they should be green. Likewise my columns F and G are also beige – and it looks like they are supposed to be white.

I’m sure I’m doing something simple that is wrong … but what could it be? Many thanks.

You can still modify the data there, I suppose that can be confusing since it’s no longer green. It’s setup so when column C contains a date that is within 31 days of today, it turns the row green, indicating it’s been reconciled. If it goes over 31 days, that typically means it needs reconciling, so it turns beige. I see you don’t have a date in column C, so that’s why it isn’t green.

Thanks. I had been skittish about changing anything in a non-green box (having already learned that lesson the hard way), and didn’t know that beige was okay.

I will give it a try, thank you!

Upon initial efforts, many of the accounts will reconcile now, yay. A handful are not clicking into place (mostly credit cards that aren’t used every month — i.e. with statements from several months back), but I will investigate those details further before asking for assistance. Fingers crossed. Thanks again!

Thank you again. I’ve now gone through my (long) list of accounts to reconcile, and, happily, the overwhelming majority (24 out of 32) worked cleanly – hurrah. That means your advice already got me 75% of the way there! Now I just have to figure out what’s holding up the other 8 accounts. Before I seek help by describing these in detail, here’s some general info that may reduce the list of questions:

  1. two are mortgage accounts. Perhaps the Account Reconciliation tool isn’t meant to reconcile those? (Because mortgage monthly statement are, yes, ā€œstatementsā€ – but they may be treated differently. They include calculations of interest charges, which obviously alter the ending balance (ie amount still owed) but aren’t shown on statement as line-item transactions, in the way a ā€˜charge’ shows up on a credit card statement.). If that’s right, i.e. if this Account Reconciliation sheet isn’t meant for loan account statements, that’s fine – I will delete those two accounts from the list of statements to reconcile.
  2. Next is a bank account that shows as $250 out of balance. Here I suspect something that may be wrong. That $250 happens to be the exact amount of a direct deposit that started in last month’s paycheck. FYI: I use your other tool (Paycheck Deduction Transaction Generator) to handle my monthly paycheck. In PDTG, almost all of my paycheck goes to bank A (the one now showing as $250 out of balance), with only $250 now going to bank B. In PDTG I listed bank A as the master institution for my paycheck, and entered this $250 as a deposit to bank B. I wonder whether that partial direct deposit (to bank B) is somehow being held against bank A, too, and putting the account out of balance?
  3. one other bank account has a feed issue – Tiller has account balances but not transaction data. I’ve submitted a ticket about that one, so will wait until it’s sorted to see whether it fixes the problem.
  4. that leaves four last accounts. Three are credit cards, and one is a bank account, out of balance by varying amounts. I don’t immediately see what the problem may be with these – there are no obvious issues with transactions missing the statement by a day or two, as pointed out in the instructions. I will keep probing the details to see whether I can figure out the problem. At the moment it seems inexplicable (although I’m sure it’s not). When I type the detailed statement numbers into the troubleshooting section (column L), the actual figures (M) show up differently. Are there any other common/obvious problems? I may need to share more granular info about these to see whether you, or someone else, can help.

Thanks again for the help already provided! I really like the tool, and am looking forward to getting these last few accounts also over to ā€˜green’ status. (:

It should work with any kind of account that has transactions that represent every change in balance to match the statements. With the $250 issue, it just boils down to comparing the Statement to your transactions in Tiller. If everything adds up correctly in the statement, then see if you either have a missing transaction, or a duplicate transaction that is causing the $250 issue. Good luck, glad to hear you’re making progress!

I’m still making progress! On several of the accounts, with many now in ā€˜green’ status. Your tool has been hugely helpful in pointing to some problems in downloaded data – turns out the Tiller csv importer had, for some reason, reversed positive and negative values in a couple of accounts. Yikes. I spotted that and have been fixing manually (ugh).

However, the $250 issue remains. I have checked and double-checked that account, which is my main checking account. Everything is correct and in balance UNTIL last month. After my last paycheck appears (6/30), my account is $250 out of balance. This, as noted, matches the size of payroll deductions, including one being sent to Bank of America. Hmmm. Is there any way a PDTG deduction to a second bank might be causing the issue? If so, should I insert a fake dummy transaction to compensate? (That sounds risky.)

Thank you!

with transfers, there is often the need for an offsetting transaction. I know for PayPal, for every purchase there needs to be three transactions: 1 for the purchase itself, one for the transfer out of the checking account to PayPal and another for the transfer in to the PayPal account from the checking account. PayPal never provides the transfer in transaction so I always have to create them manually. I just started an HSA account this year and have a deduction from my paycheck each month for that, and I have to create an offsetting transacton for it since the HSA and the Payroll both have their own accounts. You might have to do the same…

Okay, I entered a kind of dummy transaction to cover that $250, and the account now shows as green. I’ll watch to see whether that’s needed each month (as long as I retain that second account deposit).

In other news, I successfully ā€˜greened’ all the other accounts, hurrah. Your tool was, indeed, super-useful – it caught places in the last few accounts where transactions had been missed in the download, etc. Without this sheet, I would never have known that my Tiller data was incomplete or wrong. So once again, thank you for the work in putting this together!

Glad it was useful for you, I still consider it my most important template for assuring my data as accurate!
