Hi all. I’m up against an unexpected issue while trying to add the “Net Worth Snapshot”. Attempting to add it to my Tiller spreadsheet, I find that this is not possible, and a message “Your spreadsheet already contains a sheet with a name, Accounts, that will conflict with this solution“ is displayed.
Now, I understand that you can’t install a spreadsheet with conflicting tab names. But I find it surprising that the issue is with a tab named “Accounts”, which to my understanding is already present in every Tiller spreadsheet.
What gives?
I would really appreciate the ability to generate a net worth spreadsheet, it would be super useful to have a report for the tax season purposes.
Update: It occurred to me that I can use the Google Sheets snapshotting solution to try something out, and revert if I am not pleased with the result.
So I renamed my “Accounts” sheet to “AccountsX”. This time around the “Net Worth Snapshot” said that it’s able to install, but that it will create an “Accounts” sheet for me because I do not have one.
Most interesting and seems to suggest that there might be a bug in there somewhere.
I tried something else just now: I renamed old tab “Accounts” to “AccountsX”, and let “Net Worth Snapshot” install. The installation created a new “Accounts” tab.
This made the “Net Worth Snapshot” tab work, but it messed up other sheets such as “Balances”.
I may have repaired things by some judiciously made interventions in the tabs “Net Worth” and “Balances”.
First, go to “File > Version History > Name Current Version” to make a sheet snapshot. If something goes wrong, you can always go to “File > Version History > See All Versions”, and select “Restore this version” from the kebab menu of the card with your backup’s name.
Then, rename current “Accounts” to “AccountsX”
Then, you can reload the spreadsheet and install the “Net Worth Snapshot” sheet. It will create a new “Accounts” sheet for you.
You need to look at “Accounts” and “AccountsX”, and note the column changes between the sheets in the hidden section: some column have changed their column letters. Of course, first unhide the hidden section so you can see what is going on.
You can manually copy the visible settings from “AccountsX” to “Accounts”. This will mess up the “Balances” and “Net Worth” sheets.
Expanding the hidden section of these two sheets, at the very right end of the resulting sheet display, there is a section named “Sheet References”. This section seems to contain, for each sheet used in forming" “this” sheet, the column locations. For example in the heading section “Balance History”, a row which has“Account, D” means that the “Account” header is column D in the “Balance History” tab.
Manually modify the values in “Sheet References” so that the column letters match actuals in the new “Accounts” tab.
Once you complete this, it seems that the issue with “Balances” and “Net Worth” will be fixed.
I wonder is there an automated upgrade script for this?
I wonder if this would have worked out cleaner to remove the Accounts sheet instead of renaming it - renaming a sheet could make other sheets referencing it point to the renamed sheet. And then also removing and/or reinstalling the Balances and Net Worth sheets. No hacking involved.
It should work. The latest templates are designed to dynamically change column references.
Removing Accounts, Balances, and Net Worth sheets does not remove any of your data. You could do a file copy to reference the before and after changes, if needed.
The beauty with spreadsheets is that you have options and you can certainly make the changes however you like. But in the event others may reference this post, I believe these changes can be made without looking at formulas.
