I’ve just started using Tags, and the Tags Report. I mainly want to track our various expenses when we travel, i.e. food, lodging, gas, auto, etc. I have a group named Travel, and 4 categories: Camping, cruises, family and other (which are our main travel events), and use the tags throughout all 4 categories. My question is, I can filter the tags report by date, but cannot filter it by category. Is there a way to do this? Or, another solution I’m not thinking about to get how much spent in each category, broken out by tag for each?
Hi Karen,
If there’s a way to filter the tags report by category, I don’t recall hearing about it, but you might be able to modify what I do to meet your needs. I’m only interested in the total amount spent on each travel event, so I lump all of the expenses into a category named “Travel Related” and create new tags specific to each vacation. For example, I have tags named London - June 2025, and Martha’s Vineyard - Oct. 2025. Since you want to track specific expenses within each category, you could modify your existing tags to make them more descriptive. Your category of Camping could have tags for “State Park June 2025 - Food,” “State Park June 2025 - Lodging,” etc.
I hope this helps; let us know how you decide to handle it.
Rebecca
Have you tried the Transaction Tracker in Tiller Community Solutions? Here’s a link that explains it: 🏆 Transaction Tracker for Google Sheets
It’s a really robust sheet that really helps you find specific details.
I also use Tags specific to a trip like @Rebecca.S mentions. I find it useful, especially when some purchases happen in different months (plane tickets for example) than the actual trip itself.
I would use a pivot table in this instance and filter by the tags that you are interested in.
There is a modification made by @rhowell that I think is what you are looking for. Here is the link to the community page.
I recently updated this report to be able to do that- 🏆 Account and Category Report.
Here is an example of…
- Tag name contains “New”
- Category = “Travel Food”
Right shows filtered transactions. Left sums them by Tag. You can sum them by any of the following…
Hopefully, one of the solutions recommended to you will work.
Thanks.
