Import Chase Categories

I am importing from Chase Credit cards. When I look at the data they export as CSV, I see I can get the auto-category they provide, which is sufficient for my purposes and certainly much better than having to do them all by hand. How can I get these catgories to import with Tiller?

Tiller cannot import the Chase categories, however Tiller offers it’s own auto-category feature.

  1. Add your categories from Chase to the “Categories” sheet.
  2. Then use “AutoCat” to create a simple rule to automatically categorize a transaction based on the imported description. For example, if a description has “McDonalds” categorize as “Fast Food.”

AutoCat is very powerful and can get you started by suggesting rules based on your transaction history. There is also an “Advanced Rule Builder” to create multiple criteria for an AutoCat rule.

I am using an Excel spreadsheet and i have the same problem. This is Answer below is a lousy answer because you have to manually set up all the categories still. Chase has done the work for you already. The data is there. The real question is whether that data is going to the data feed and how can we get at it into our spreadsheets?

I’d love to have auto sync of categories between Tiller and Chase. If I ever decide to redo my Tiller categories, I’ll use Chase’s automatic ones, but the idea of doing it all manually, is a mountain too high (says lazy bones).

Try the “category hint” column. It doesn’t fill retroactively but if you add it to your Transactions sheet it will automate a category in for new transactions. Not wired to the Category column but with some formula magic you could make it work. These are our data provider’s categories so they may or may not match what Chase has but there is a decent chance they will.
