Introducing an easier, more modern Tiller Console

Hello @braxton.ponder

While you’re here, would you mind sharing what improvements you make to your sheets? Do you think these could be useful to most users?

Mainly, I overhauled the community Transaction Tracker sheet. I’ve fixed some filters that weren’t working and added a couple more and added a Sort by Category option. I added a Clear All Filters button (that requires you to set up a script and I don’t think the scripts copy over with an imported sheet). I added conditional formatting to highlight positive value entries so it’s easy to see credits vs debits at a glance.

I use this tab quite a bit and can track down transactions or group them by just about whatever way I want. There’s a a total amount displayed for whatever you filter down to, so it can be a quick way to get a sum of whatever you have filtered for.

I left in place a couple of filters for notes and tags which don’t work with my sheets. Apparently they were designed for older tiller core sheets or maybe some custom variant.

I also worked on the community category tracker sheet. I added a drop-down selector to exclude one (or more) categories from the pie chart so that if you have one large one it doesn’t overwhelmeverything else.

I changed the display of category listings on the left so that it only shows the income or expense categories according to what you select for the pie chart. And I changed the sorting so that they display from largest to smallest categories matching the way the pie chart is set up.

I added a count for the number of uncategorized transactions (and made it red to stand out) since I often glance at this sheet first. There was already a dollar total amount of uncategorized, but that didn’t tell you how many transactions you needed to hunt down.

I’m happy to share, although I’m a little sketchy on exactly how to do that with Google Sheets. I did post about most of these changes in relevant threads, but didn’t see much interest, so I probably didn’t end up posting all the final edits.

Is there a plan to fix the HTML title element for the console pages? This has been bugging me since the day it went live and I just assumed it was a temporary bug that would be quickly fixed, but it’s been three weeks now…

And by “fix” I mean set the title. Looking at the html it appears that the title is not being set, which is why the browser is just showing the page’s URL in the tab title instead…

I respectfully disagree. Large numbers don’t make testing impossible - they just make it more expensive.
Software companies allocate resources to development, testing, project management, maintenance, marketing, sales, infrastructure, and administration.
The amount allocated to testing is generally driven by what each company deems as an acceptable level of escaping bugs (bugs not caught and fixed in the development cycle that subsequently are found by the user base).
Increasing the amount allocated to testing generally reduces the number of escaping bugs - it’s not a silver bullet, however, as simply catching bugs doesn’t solve the underlying development issues that caused them.
But it does provide relief to the user base - generally at the expense of timely releases and availability of new features. In my case, I’m willing to live with that in order to maintain a stable workflow.

Please realize that Tiller runs lean. I believe they have grown since 2024 , but in a 2024 post Heather in a different thread let escape they were a company of just 15 individuals. Like I said I’m sure they have grown since then and if you Google them a who’s who comes up with 15-50 company size. Mr Polson has said they are not going to take VC funding in one of his recent blog posts. Who wants their input into how things should run plus imagine the price increases!? @tim486 I appreciate where you are coming from but hope you see the bigger picture. Personally, I am satisfied with the level of service provided and I think Tiller does a phenomenal job with the resources they have. -David

@cal I flagged this page title discrepancy for the team, good catch! Hoping that can get updated soon.

@tim486 I appreciate your perspective here. I think you get it. There are tradeoffs and while we don’t want to disrupt workflows, we do prioritize velocity and try to balance it as best we can with quality. You should see that Refresh button for Yodlee connections behaving better as of yesterday, we pushed another change to address the issue where the button stays stuck on “recently refreshed” for too long. It wasn’t really introduced by this new console update, but rather by our rewrite of our Yodlee integration (mentioned here).

@martha.rudkin @mysterytea @dminches @braxton.ponder that should make sure it (refresh button stuck on “recently refreshed”) doesn’t happen to you again too.

Thanks for the kudos @freshman.david

Some other updates we pushed this week for small improvements to the Console:

  • We added a “open sheet” button on the mobile view @Lulu
  • We fixed the “Recently used” behavior for the category selector when categorizing a transaction from the Console/mobile. It will show up to 3 recently used categories at the top now (based on what’s in your transactions sheet). @jarrettsorensen
  • Fixed the close button color on mobile when in dark mode for the side menu (it was too dark/couldn’t see it)
  • Improved the layout of the Accounts list on mobile (more room for the account name, hopefully the … is accessible now - but more work to do here I think).
  • Added a pull down to refresh feature when on mobile @jarrettsorensen

I am still seeing the grayed-out “refreshing” button. The only way I can refresh is to edit credentials.

@dminches I just reached out to you via support email to troubleshoot. We do sometimes find that connections get “stuck” due to issues on yodlee’s side but I want to make sure I’m not missing something about the changes we pushed.

Thanks @heather, the “open sheet” button works.

I already have the Sheets app and do most of my editing from my mobile (minor changes to data validation/conditional formatting). With the new Tiller console I barely have to use my laptop, very convenient.
