Introducing Investments (Beta) + Cash Prizes Builder Contest

We know that tracking investments holdings and position history is critical for a complete financial picture.

That’s why we’re excited to announce today that we’ve just released our new Investments (Beta) features. And you can enter to win cash prizes by building a solution on top of these new features.

Here’s how it works (Google Sheets only for now - Excel coming soon!)

  • You’ll get full access to all Investments (Beta) features while they’re in beta.

  • Add your investment accounts to Tiller if you haven’t already from the Tiller Console at my.tiller.com/accounts

  • Add the Holdings History and Holdings sheets Direct Fills Google Sheets from the Tiller Console. If you have Advanced Security turned on, you can install the templates from the Tiller Money Feeds sidebar via the Templates section (previously noted bug fixed).

  • Watch the investments data flow in - please note since we’ve just enabled this feature for everyone, if you already had your investment accounts connected, it may take a day or two before you see the holdings data fill in since we’ll need time to collect it on the next refresh.

  • Build and enter to win cash prizes

  • Works for Google Sheets powered by Direct Fills only* We also hope to have an update about availability and support for Microsoft Excel soon so Excel lovers can participate too.

More information about access to these features after they move out of beta will be released before the beta ends.

Feedback & Support

If you have feedback on any of these new features, chime in below or write to beta@tiller.com.

Please note our team is not escalating tickets to our data partners for holdings related data while this feature is in beta. If you’d like to report an issue with the Investments (Beta) feature, please complete this form.

Read more about the Investments (Beta) features on our help center here.

*Investments (Beta) features work only with Direct Fills spreadsheets. You can upgrade your Sidebar Fills Google Sheets to use Direct Fills from the Tiller Console. Read more about Direct Fills for Google Sheets.

  2. Create a community topic documenting your solution (see criteria below) in the gSheets Templates category - add the investments-builder-contest tag to your topic.

  3. Submit this Google Form and share a link to that community topic (this helps us keep submissions organized!) Entries are not considered submitted unless you complete the form.

Communiity Voting

You can browse contest entries by visiting Topics tagged investments-builder-contest and vote for your favorites.

Qualifying Entry Criteria & Contest Rules

  1. Must be built off the Holdings sheet and/or Holdings History sheet. Manual entries to Holdings History or Holdings are accepted.

  2. Must live inside a Tiller powered sheet. We recommend starting with the Foundation Template as your base.

  3. Native Google Sheets functions only — formulas (QUERY, FILTER, ARRAYFORMULA, SPARKLINE, HSTACK, etc.), conditional formatting, built-in charts or pivot tables.

  4. Cannot require Scripts or 3rd party tools/add-ons. Entries cannot require Apps Script or other 3rd party tools or services in order to run.

  5. Must update dynamically. Formulas/charts reference live Holdings sheet or Holdings History sheet ranges so the dashboard updates as new data fills, rather than a one-time static report.

  6. You, the builder, are based in the U.S. and over the age of 18

  7. Though you, the builder, will maintain ownership, copyright, and any other kinds of rights to the content, you grant Tiller an unlimited, non-exclusive license to use the resulting content, and/or portions of the content or derivatives of the content, in any way and for any purpose as Tiller solely determines.

  8. Community post must include:

  • A plain-language explanation of what question it answers (e.g., “how diversified am I across accounts,” “how’s my portfolio trending vs. a benchmark,” “what’s my asset allocation drift”).

  • Step-by-step setup instructions on how to set up

  • A screenshot or short recording of the finished dashboard. 1 to 5 minute video overview strongly encouraged.

By submitting an entry, you agree to the official Investments Builder Contest rules.

Hello,

I am not seeing where I would enable these sheets on direct fill.

Thanks!

Hi Heather

Tiller is a fine tool

The lack of Excel resources is disconcerting

Tried to add a screenshot up above to better clarify but if you visit the Tiller Console my.tiller.com then click your sheet name then choose Templates you should be able to search for Holdings to see both options. Let me know if you’re still not seeing it.

I hear you @pbc363 - we’re close on the Excel side, but didn’t want to hold up the announcement for it.

Congratulations and thank you! I’ve been keen to replace Empower with something driven by Tiller and glad to see this in beta but… looking at https://my.tiller.com/spreadsheets/xxxxx/templates I see “Templates Not Available
This feature is not yet supported with Advanced Security.” and making a new sheet with a copy of the “Direct Fill Foundation” Google Sheet I don’t see the Holdings sheet.

Hi Heather,

I’m an excel user, would love to use this when yall release it. I have a question. Will this be able to track Crypto assets. I am pulling in accounts from crypto exchanges eg Kraken and would love to see snapshot of holdings in Tiller without relying on logging into to another app. Lastly, can it allow for manual entry’s for cold wallet storage of holding or possibly connecting to Ledger app to pull holding data?

Installed the template: it was added as “Holdings Report Template”, rather than “Holdings” (see screenshot below). Can I (or should I) rename it to “Holdings”?

Does Holdings work with either Plaid or Yodlee accounts?

Exciting!! If I have advanced security on, is there a way to get those sheets? E.g., the exact names of the sheets needed and the column names? I can then just create the sheet

Thank you - this is super-exciting! I have now a lot of python code to try and do this and it is painful… Excited to replace it…

If I have advanced security on, how can I add the sheets to make this work?

Hi Heather,

This is a fantastic addition to the tool!

I went to Templates on the website and installed the Current Holdings template, which added a new sheet to my Google Sheets file. It is currently empty, but I understand from your note that it may take a few days for the data to populate.

Is there anything else I need to do on my end to get this feature fully up and running?

Thank you!

Alex

awiner - Same thing/question from me.

I’m having the same issue, so it’s not just you. I added the templates through the Tiller sidebar in my Google Sheet, did you do the same?

When I look at the “Templates” tab in the Tiller web console, I see the following:

Of course, that’s because I turned on advanced security.

Same message on the web console, and installed it from the sidebar instead.

Also: my Holdings History is now populated, but “Holdings Report Template” is empty.

Hi Heather,
Amazing timing! I was in the middle of setting up a manual CSV export work flow for each of the institutions I invest through (8 total) which would have been quite a pain.
Thanks a ton for this!
BTW, column H header in the Holdings Report Template sheet reads “Curent Price”, so missing an “r”.
Thanks again!
Kevin

Hi Heather, this is exciting! In reviewing the Sample Holdings Data example sheet it appears the data is currently misaligned to the columns (VEA should be the Symbol not Quantity).

Wow, this is something I’ve been wanting from day one!! I REALLY hope you don’t leave us Excel users behind again on this new feature!! This would be incredibly helpful for me!!

I don’t think I will try this yet. The Symbol and Quantity columns are reversed/wrong. You should be more careful.

After renaming “Holdings Report Template” to just “Holdings” and refreshing the investment accounts, “Holdings” is now populated, though not fully - “Curent Price” (sic), “Current Value”, and “Acount Name” are all blank.

@TomGoBravo @arvind.govindarajan

You can now use the Tiller Money Feeds sidebar to install these if you have Advanced Security. The previously reported bug has been fixed.

@aaron.lyons thanks for calling this out! This was just a copy/paste error when I pasted in the dummy holdings from a different CSV file. @larryc531 if you fill in your actual holdings the columns are populated correctly, this was only an issue with the sample data.
