I also found that it did not match up originally with the old Savings Budget at the beginning of my 2026 calendar year, but seemed to somehow catch up as of the start of September. I have no idea why and I have never been able to reconcile the two month-by-month until current. If you can figure it out, let me know!

And thanks for testing!

Thanks for all the hours of work you’ve put into this! The new version cleared almost all of my errors, but I still have one in C4: Array arguments to COUNTIFS are of different size, and D8 is still filled with © 2026 Tiller instead of Net Worth.

Also, it pulled in expenditures from a category that I hide from reports (Travel Related). We pull funds from savings instead of budgeting for travel.

That’s what I was referring to. The count if argument is likely because one of the columns of the transactions sheet referenced by the formula is not the same as the one on your sheet. Likely if you customized or moved things over.

That’s why we should clean all the direct references to the columns and use indirect instead.

I have an issue with positive amounts over budget (for example income higher than expected) being counted as negative and displaying the message envelope overspent.

Gotcha. It’s been a long time, so the only column I recall adding is a transaction note (column F) after the transaction amount.

Ah, I had to revert back to an older change at one point when I was working on this and apparently didn’t fix a direct reference in C4 rather than a lookup/match thing. I’ll work on that.

It should be respecting the hide from reports column on Categories. Is that hidden there on yours? If not, let me know and I’ll see if I can figure out why it’s not respecting that. It could be a reference issue.

I look into the C4 issue as well.

I’ve just swapped out the D8 current real net worth for a summation of all the accounts that get filtered in with the side columns, so hopefully that solves that problem and just simplifies things in the process. I was trying to get it to be in line with the rest of the net worth calculations across Tiller, but XLOOKUPs were just killing me here no matter what.

C4 _hopefully_ now shouldn’t have an array argument problem? I don’t know why it was getting countifs sizes differently, but I’ve just tried a different tactic entirely to getting to that number to get around it as long as it doesn’t go kablooey for different reasons.

The income higher than expected was just a boneheaded thing on my end and hopefully I’ve gotten that straightened out without breaking other calculations. That B12 formula is such a monster that it’s easy to break it. It took me months to wrap my head around enough to get it mostly working and there are still days it feels a little like I need to sacrifice a goat and do a special incantation to keep it working. \>.\<

Please keep sending any other bugs headed my way so I can keep slapping them down.

I found an edge case in the new Savings Budget. I have a positive $599.02 reimbursement categorized to an Expense category called Reimbursable. The category should return to $0, but the sheet reports −$1,198.04. It appears that `-ABS(currActRaw)` removes the transaction’s original sign, so a net-positive Expense category is treated as additional spending rather than a contra-expense. This would also affect refunds received in a later month from the original purchase.

Yeah, that makes sense, I should have thought that through a little more when I did it. I just needed sign inversion and then to reverse the add/subtract on the Available calculation.

I’ve just updated the B12 formula in the v0.3 sheet - try redownloading that and let’s see if it solves the problem.

Thanks, Pete. I really appreciate the enormous amount of time you’ve given this project.

Version 0.3 cleared the errors in C4, D8, and my hidden category is now hidden.

Current Liabilities is slightly higher than my actual liabilities (calculated from my balance history), and the difference is the balance in one of my credit card accounts. That balance must have been skipped.

Now, a couple of questions: (1) How are you calculating Current Liquid Assets? I can’t get any of my balances to match what was calculated. (2) Ditto, Current Available Unallocated

Lastly, a minor observation: The cells for one of my expense categories (in columns B through I) are shaded gray and in bold text, same as the Group it sits directly under.

</div>

Hmm, I’ll have to look into why it’s ignoring one of your balances or why they’re not matching. Did you exclude it in Column N, or is it not showing up in K/L at all?

Current Liquid Assets is supposed to be calculating any accounts in Columns K and L that are not excluded in Column N and are categorized as assets in the Assets sheet that’s usually hidden by default. (Column M is a little for display purposes. When you exclude an account in N, it gets checked in M.) Theoretically, Current Liabilities is also supposed to respect excluded accounts on that Column K-L/N list.

Current Available Unallocated is supposed to (1) take that Current Liquid Assets, (2) balance that against the Current Liabilities, (3) add up what’s allocated to the digital category envelopes in the Available column, and (4) balance all those against each other.

The goal was to inform me whether or not I had overallocated my actual liquid assets to envelopes, because if I put $5,000 in my envelopes, but I only actually have $4,500 available to me, I couldn’t actually afford to fund those envelopes if I actually needed to spend them all to $0. This was precisely something that got us in trouble when I first took over the budgeting in 2024 from my wife. We budgeted X amount/mo. for certain things, but we didn’t actually have the money for some of that because I hadn’t accounted for my wife taking out cash from time to time and a few automated transfers to some side accounts. I also wanted to know if we had money in our accounts above and beyond what we had allocated to envelopes, because either I could use that to fund ad-hoc envelopes that aren’t essentially funded monthly with the budget, or we could spend it on discretionary stuff.

My guess with the category getting declared a group and conditionally formatted that way is because it’s in all caps. I haven’t figured out a better way so far to differentiate groups vs. categories and that’s how I have it getting sorted out in the B12 formula and conditional formatting for the spill range. I’ll think on that a little more, because I hadn’t considered that someone might just have an all-caps category, but I bet a lot of people do. I’m sure I can probably come up with a formula argument/parsing that can differentiate between groups and categories, I’ll just need to think through the best way to do it. Open to ideas if you have something.

My current liquid assets is incorrect. I had to expand the drop down for the exclude from budget because I have so many accounts, but in the formula somewhere it seems to stop calculating around row 41. That is where the drop down stopped. The formatting for the additional accounts is also not the same. (I have over 60 accounts because of closed accounts from over the last 2 years.)
I am still debating how to handle the incorrect savings balances from the beginning of the year to then trouble shoot why numbers aren’t matching. I will keep you posted on that.

Ok, here’s a Version 0.4 attempt.

> **[Monthly Envelope Rollover Budget Test v 0.4](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1WHVlSojwoRMEerx-g4Nu0bcfi43pMylVW56GplDqNrE/edit?usp=sharing)**
>
> This Sheet is private

I’ve modified the Liquid Assets calculation so that instead of trying to parse the hidden Accounts Tab along with my K2 array, the K2 formula is doing that alone and Liquid Assets and Current Liabilities are only parsing this sheet tab. I’ve added a helper column on class now that is supposed to draw from and respect whatever the Accounts tab says an account is (asset vs. liability).

I had completely forgotten to mention before in my calculation of Current Available Unallocated that I had it taking into account income that is budgeted to receive in the month but has not yet actually been received. I didn’t want false alarms early in the month because the expected paychecks haven’t hit just yet, otherwise people would be required to basically have enough cash on hand to pre-fund a month. That gave me heart attacks when I was first trying to do this with the old sheet with my scribblings in the margins 2 years ago. So that is included in the H6 formula right now - any income over what is budgeted to receive _should_ just show up as extra income and the formula shouldn’t have problems with it.

I’ve updated Columns K through now O to accommodate up to 200 accounts that can be included and excluded, so hopefully that solves Christina’s problem.

Rebecca, let me know if it’s still not parsing the Accounts tab properly to pull the accounts you want that you haven’t hidden, and I’ll try to debug what’s going on. It should be respecting the Hide columns there, but if it’s not pulling something that isn’t hidden, that’s a problem.

Once again, I really sincerely appreciate everyone’s testing on this. I’m learning a lot as I go along here.

In Version 0.4:

**Fixed:** The category that was being declared a group and conditionally formatted that way because it was in all caps

**Fixed:** Current Liabilities is higher than my actual liabilities by the amount of the balance in one credit card account.

**My Mistake:** All assets were included in Current Liquid Assets by default. I didn’t think to exclude IRAs because I’ve never considered them to be liquid assets.

Current Available Unallocated is still a mystery to me. I can’t get my numbers to equal what was calculated, even when I account for the “Unauthorized Overspending,” which is actually the amount of my next paycheck that hasn’t hit my account yet.

<div class="post-metadata">

**Author:** ![pkrug539](https://sea2.discourse-cdn.com/flex020/user_avatar/community.tiller.com/pkrug539/32/18865_2.png) [@pkrug539](https://community.tiller.com/u/pkrug539)\

</div>

Hmm, do you include you next paycheck in the Categories budgets? That’s where it’s getting included in my budget; I budget for X amount from my paychecks, X amount as a floor/baseline from my wife who has very variable hours, and a little freelance stuff that I have coming in infrequently but somewhat routinely. The formula should look at what’s budgeted to receive there in Categories and should apply sort of an “advance” on the formula that gradually decreases as the money comes in, and then after it hits the budgeted amount, it just applies the rest as surplus.

Do you have any categories that are showing up as overspent on availability? I haven’t tested that yet because I haven’t had any overspent categories in this first month that I’ve personally had this sheet functional for myself, so I don’t know if there’s an error in the formula in adding up overspent envelopes that I’m just not accounting for?

Glad the new conditional formatting rules are working better. I tried a different approach there that I was very unsure was going to work properly if people had modified their foundation template sheets.

I’ll work on adding some documentation in notes/comments for cells with instructions on how some things are calculated and how to use the side columns. Hopefully that will help new users.

All accounts are included as liquid by default, and you’d need to decide whatever accounts need to be excluded, either from liabilities or assets. My goal was to give people flexibility with this sheet because they may not want them hidden across the board from sheetwide calculations, but do want them not to be included for the purposes of their routine budget envelopes. We have several accounts such as a high-yield savings that also includes possible monthly raffle bonuses with our credit union that I don’t want included in liquid assets because there are rules about how often we can take money out. That money isn’t actually available to me at a moment’s notice even though I want it included in things like overall net worth or to show up on the Balances tab so we’re keeping an eye on it.

The same should go for current liabilities. You should be able to exclude the one credit card account if you don’t think it should be calculated into your current liabilities and hopefully that fixes it for you. If the one credit card account that’s throwing things off is not showing up in the list in Column K, please let me know so I can troubleshoot why it’s not getting included.

Yes, each of our monthly paychecks has a category and budgeted amounts.

I have no categories/envelopes that are overspent. I pad my monthly budget categories to ensure rollover savings each month that will accumulate enough funds to pay periodic expenses like auto insurance or property taxes, which are paid quarterly or semi-annually.

The Unauthorized Overspending isn’t really overspending; it’s budgeted income that I’ll get later this month.

The credit card that had been excluded from current liabilities is working fine now. Current liabilities are correct to the penny.

Hmm, yeah, it should not be doing that. It should only be computing expense envelopes in the budget health/overspending and should not be incorporating income into that in the first place. That’s weird and I’ll look into it.
