I’ve been using this workflow to get a high level overview of my finances each month using my Tiller-powered Google Sheet + Tiller’s Claude Connector. It’s a visual financial dashboard with income/expense KPIs, spending by group, spending by category, budget variance findings, and recommended actions built directly from my categorized data. No formulas, no copy/pasting into a template, no manual updating. I just ask Claude to update it at the end of each month.
Attached to this post is the dashboard template file. Here’s everything you need to get it running.
Before you start: install the Tiller Claude Connector
This workflow depends on the Tiller Claude Connector, which lets Claude read your Tiller spreadsheet’s transactions and categories directly (with your permission — nothing happens without you asking for it in the moment).
If you haven’t set this up yet:
- Install the Tiller Claude Connector (read more on our Help Center)
- Once it’s connected, Claude will be able to access your Tiller-linked Google Sheets.
You only have to do this once. After that, the connector works in any conversation with Claude going forward.
Step 1: Download the template
Download the attached file: Financial_Dashboard_Template.html
Click the download button in the upper left to download.
This is a blank dashboard shell and has no data in it yet. You’ll drop it into a new conversation with Claude.
Step 2: Start a conversation with Claude and upload the file
Open a new (or existing) chat with Claude, and attach the template file to your message. You can simply drag and drop the file from your downloads folder (or wherever you saved it) into the chat with Claude.
Step 3: Ask Claude to build it, using this phrase
“Build my financial dashboard for [your spreadsheet name] for the last three months.”
Replace [your spreadsheet name] with the actual name of your Tiller spreadsheet as it appears on the Tiller Console. You can also say just “last month” and the build will happen a little quicker since it’s not having to build all three months.
You may have to “allow” Claude to access the tools it needs to run the analysis if this is the first time you’re also using the Tiller Claude Connector. So keep an eye out for these messages in the chat to allow the necessary permission.
That’s it. Claude will:
- Confirm your spreadsheet and pull the last three complete calendar months (it skips the current in-progress month, since partial-month data would throw off every number)
- Compute your income, expenses, net cash flow, and category/group breakdowns
- Cross-reference your budget targets to flag categories that are meaningfully over/under or un-budgeted
- Write up a plain-language overview, a few key findings, and concrete recommended actions
- Hand you back a personalized copy of the same HTML file, now populated with your data
Step 4: Review your dashboard
Claude will update the HTML file and send it back to you with your own personalized data. Normally it will open by default, but if not, click on the file to open in the side panel right in your chat.
That’s your dashboard. You’ll see a month picker at the top, which allows you to navigate between months. You’ll also see tiles near the top for Total Income, Total Expenses, Net Cash Flow, and total transactions in the period with an indicator of whether any are uncategorized.
Next, you’ll see a spending-by-group breakdown, spending-by-category and income sources donut charts for a quick visual on how you’re doing. There is a Financial Analysis writeup giving you key findings as well as recommended actions. And last, there is a complete category table showing transaction count + amount totals per category.
Important notes:
-
The data will only be as accurate as the categorized information. Make sure you’ve got all your data categorized to get the complete picture.
-
The report generated is static meaning it won’t update automatically if you re-categorize transactions, transactions that come in late that weren’t included at the time you ran it, or make other changes to your data. But you can ask Claude to update specific months’ data at any time and it will update the HTML file with the new information or when you update it for the next month it will automatically regenerate the previous month to try and catch this.
-
Claude can make mistakes. Be sure to confirm the data in your spreadsheet directly.
Updating it next month
Keep using the same conversation and the same file — you don’t need to start over or rebuild it from scratch. Once you’ve got your personalized copy, just say:
“Update my dashboard for last month.”
Claude will recompute the most recently completed month and the one before it (this catches late-arriving transactions or categorization changes you made after the fact), and hand you back an updated version of your file with the new month added to the picker. Your older months stay exactly as they were.
If you want to force a refresh of an older month specifically — say you just went back and fixed a bunch of mis-categorized transactions from March — you can ask for that directly: “refresh March too.”
A few things to know
-
Uncategorized transactions get called out, not hidden. If some of a month’s transactions don’t have a category yet, the total transactions at the top will say so directly (e.g. “6 uncategorized”) instead of silently leaving them out of your totals. Worth checking those before trusting the numbers fully.
-
Your dashboard is private to you. The file Claude hands back only has your own category-level data in it — no account numbers, institution names, or transaction descriptions ever go into the file. It’s safe to keep on your own computer (if you choose to download it, but that’s not necessary since it lives in this specific chat), but treat it the same way you’d treat any export of your financial summary (it does contain your actual spending amounts by category).
-
This is a live template, not a one-time report. The same file keeps working from conversation to conversation. You’re not generating a new one each month, you’re updating the one you already have. I recommend pinning the chat in Claude so you can easily find it later. (Just right click any chat to pin).
Make it your own
This is a template and a starting point. You can completely customize this dashboard to make it more useful to you. The HTML file has the prompt (process) that Claude will use to generate the dashboard. You can ask Claude to tell you what that is and ask it to make changes or read / edit the HTML file directly to customize it. You can ask Claude to make any changes you’d like to the dashboard including what tiles show at the top, the ordering of the information on the dashboard, how to think about key findings/recommended actions, add new sections, and more. Just like with a spreadsheet, the sky is the limit.
One thing to note is that it will work best with a paid Claude subscription. I’ve used it with a free Claude account and it will generate the initial report and be able to update it for me each month, but I often max out the tokens if I start asking more questions or wanting it to make major changes to the dashboard, so just keep that in mind for customizing.
