Ultimate Envelopes 2026 — Now With a Mobile Companion App

Hey everyone — excited to share the biggest update yet to Ultimate Envelopes, the envelope-budgeting system built entirely on Google Sheets and designed to work seamlessly with Tiller.

If you’re not familiar: Ultimate Envelopes takes the transactions Tiller already feeds into your spreadsheet and layers a full zero-based envelope budgeting system on top — no other tools, no other subscriptions, nothing to install.

Your Data Never Leaves Google

This one matters, so it gets its own section instead of a footnote: all processing happens inside your browser and within Google Sheets. Transaction amounts, account balances, and budget data are never sent to an external server — there isn’t one. Delete the script and everything you’ve built stays exactly where it always was: your own Google Drive.

The Companion App works the same way — it connects directly to your sheet using your Google account. Nobody but you ever sees your numbers.

Name Your Own Price

Ultimate Envelopes is pay what you want — genuinely, including $0. Enter whatever feels fair at checkout. If it helps you budget better and you’re able to support it, great; if you can’t right now, that’s fine too. Both the Sheet and the Companion App are included either way, no feature gating.

Core Capabilities of UE Sheet 26

  • Envelopes tab — create an envelope for every spending category (Groceries, Rent, Subscriptions, whatever fits your life), assign a budget, and watch color-coded status bars show exactly how healthy each one is at a glance. View by account or by group, and overdrawn envelopes are flagged in red so nothing slips by.

  • Tracker tab — drill into any envelope for a full spending breakdown: current balance, total actuals, percent of budget spent, funded amount, and a complete transaction history.

  • Balances tab — a live snapshot of every account — checking, savings, credit cards, investments — grouped by type, with net worth calculated automatically. See Bank Balance, Envelope Balance, and the Delta between them side by side, plus alerts when an account hasn’t synced recently.

  • Payday tab — a guided funding workflow for every paycheck. Choose a funding template, work through each envelope until everything’s covered, and get warned if you over-fill.

  • Startup Wizard — start fresh, upgrade from a previous UE sheet, migrate an existing Tiller Foundation Sheet in, or load sample data to explore before entering your own numbers.

Meet the Companion App

The headline feature this release: a mobile-friendly web app that connects directly to your sheet. No app store, no install — open it in any browser and it’s there.

  • Insights Dashboard — balances, envelope health, and recent activity in one glance
  • Add or edit transactions on the go, without opening Google Sheets

  • Envelope Insights — balance, spending history, spending comparison, funding progress, and savings balance, all per envelope

Add it to your phone’s home screen and it launches full-screen like a native app.

Why Envelope + Zero-Based Budgeting?

Ultimate Envelopes combines two budgeting philosophies that reinforce each other:

Envelope budgeting splits your income into named categories, each with its own limit. You can see exactly what’s left for eating out this month, instead of watching one big checking balance and hoping you have enough later.

Zero-based budgeting takes it further: every dollar of income gets assigned a job before the month starts — spending, savings, debt payoff, whatever — until income minus allocations equals zero. Nothing is unaccounted for; nothing quietly disappears.

Put together: your Tiller-imported transactions land in the right envelope automatically (or with one tap), your Payday workflow forces you to assign every incoming dollar somewhere, and your Balances tab shows the real-time gap between what’s in the bank and what’s actually available once every envelope is honored. It’s the rigor of zero-based budgeting without a spreadsheet full of manual formulas — Tiller does the data entry, Ultimate Envelopes does the accounting.

Works With Your Existing Tiller Setup

Ultimate Envelopes is fully compatible with the Tiller Foundation Sheet — your existing Tiller feeds keep working exactly as they do today. (If you’re wondering why it’s not in Tiller’s official Template gallery: Tiller doesn’t currently support Apps Script in hosted templates, so this has to be distributed separately.)

What’s New in Ultimate Envelopes and Ultimate Envelopes Companion — v26.9.0

Hi everyone,

We’ve shipped a batch of improvements focused on making your Home dashboard and Payday flow clearer and faster to use. Here’s what’s new:

:house: Home Dashboard

  • The “Uncategorized” card is now Uncategorized Transactions, and shows both the number of transactions needing attention and the total dollar amount — so you can see at a glance how much is left to categorize, not just how many.
  • The Funding Progress card now has a “Go to Payday” button, so you can jump straight from your dashboard to funding your envelopes.
  • General polish across all dashboard cards — cleaner headers and better sizing on every screen size, including mobile.

:money_with_wings: Payday

  • Each funding account now shows exactly how much it still needs right in its header — no more expanding every account to check.
  • The top summary now shows “Remaining to Fund” instead of a running total — it counts down to $0.00 as you fill in amounts, so you always know how much further you have to go.
  • On mobile, envelopes that still need funding are now bolded for easy scanning, and fully-funded ones clearly say “Fully Funded.”

:clipboard: Envelope Funding History

  • Fixed an issue where an envelope’s funding history could be missing some transactions, especially recent ones — your full funding history should now always show up completely.
  • Funding history now loads noticeably faster when you open an envelope’s details.
  • Funding transactions dated in the future are now clearly marked with a “Future Funding” badge, so you can tell scheduled funding apart from funding that’s already happened at a glance.

:artist_palette: Appearance

  • Dark Mode is now a proper 3-way choice: Light, Dark, or System — pick “System” and the app will automatically match your phone or computer’s theme, including switching live if you change it.

:sparkles: Polish

  • Account names now display consistently (e.g. “HOUSE SAVINGS ACCOUNT” now reads “House Savings Account”) everywhere they appear — Balances, Payday, Envelopes, and account popups.
  • Fixed alignment on the Envelopes tab when grouped by Account.
  • Small tap-target and navigation fixes throughout.

Hi,
When I downloaded it, it said I need permission? My computer’s been doing a few wonky things lately, but I’m perplexed. Thanks!

Mine needed permission, but the guidance said to give it a minute and it should be good. If not, just email Rich’s email from the site. That is what I had to do a few years ago when I downloaded the first time. He is quite responsive.

Thank you! This system will give my ADHD brain another perspective on my budget.

OK. I’ve got the copy made - YAY! Now I’m running the runfirst, and it stops and just has the spinning wheel of frustration after the lower execution log displays this:

I’ve tried running it a couple of times, always with the same result. Does it take several minutes to run or is something amiss? (It’s been about 8 minutes) Thanks so much, Ric!

After you run the script go back to the spreadsheet and tell me what you see. Screenshots would be helpful.

Hi Ric -

It’s all good! I didn’t realize the script would keep showing the spinning circle after it had completed running. I’ve now imported my Tiller Fndn sheet and am looking forward to digging in. Thanks again, I appreciate both the template and the help!:slightly_smiling_face:

Awesome if anything else comes up just ask on this thread. So others can also benefit.

Hi again Rich,

I have a list of things I don’t fully understand. I imported my Tiller Foundation sheet, but I have some very weird numbers. I have 47 envelopes in the red, but also some cells that have the red triangle warning.

Is there a way to start the envelopes at the beginning of this month instead of the beginning of the year?

Thanks as usual!
