Hi - I am having trouble with the Autocat feature. I can get it to auto assign categories, which is its main function, but cannot get it to update descriptions based on some value in that field. Should I expect this to work?
In the below example I would expect the description to be updated to eTrade.
Yeah, that should work, assuming the Category is blank when you run AutoCat and that there isn’t another AutoCat rule higher in the list getting used first (rules run top down, first matching rule wins).
Ah, I did not realize the category had to be blank. I was hoping to create some rules to clean up payees even where the categories were already assigned, especially as some of the community dashboard features now make use of payees.
I’m revisiting this topic because it started occurring for me on Thursday or Friday last week, and I’m wondering if anyone else has had the same experience.
The Category was blank when I created the rule and ran AutoCat, and there isn’t a similar AutoCat rule higher in the list. I entered the same rule in the Beta testing sheet I’m using to connect and fill Google Sheets, and it worked perfectly there.
I could reproduce this behavior by adding a space after Description in the AutoCat header, so maybe check for something like that … where essentially the AutoCat header doesn’t exactly match the Transactions sheet header.
Thanks, Mark; I hadn’t thought of checking for extra spaces. I just did, and there aren’t any. Both column headers are exact matches. I suppose I may have inadvertently entered an extra space when I built the rule in the Rule template. I’ll double-check for that next time I add another rule.
