Beyond Frustrated! Categories keep disappearing in Transaction sheet!

Categories Keep Getting Erased: I meticulously categorize transactions in the transaction sheet, yet every time I log in, 2,000+ line items have their categories erased. This completely negates the tool’s purpose for me—tracking, budgeting, and year-over-year comparisons. Without this functionality, the tool is essentially useless.

This sounds super frustrating! I haven’t seen this happen before. I would start by looking at the Version History to see if it’s something happening in Google Sheets after you log out and at what time it happens. Otherwise, I might try re-feeding the data into a new sheet and see if you observe the same behavior in the new sheet. You can copy over the transactions, categories, etc. from the old sheet into the new sheet in case it’s the sheet itself that has some weird bug.

Erasing categories doesn’t sound like something Tiller tools would do. In addition to @Caroleen 's suggestion to check the Version History, I would also check that you are not getting duplicate transactions - in that case, your categorized transactions are still in the spreadsheet, but duplicates are getting added and so it appears categories are getting cleared.

Thanks for the tip. I went to my archived copy and copied all of the transactions from 2021 to 2024 into my 2025 sheet and that seems to have solved it. I may have messed up the workflow when I decided to start with a clean sheet beginning of 2025.

Another thing to check is whether there are any scripts running in AppScript (if you use it). I had one that was overridding my categories for a while until I detected my problem.
