a summary of past transactions by category by month or quarter,
two budget review sections, which compare actuals to budgets, for the year and the month or quarter, and
a section to review underlying transactions without leaving the sheet.
I’ve long used a pivot table similar to this sheet to review my spending and income and compare it to previous months. This sheet makes it easier to check that I’m within budget and to see the underlying transactions.
At the bottom of the window, right-click on the Budget Review tab and select Copy to, then Existing spreadsheet.
Select your Tiller spreadsheet in the window that appears and click Insert.
The sheet will appear in your spreadsheet as Copy of Budget Review. You can rename it.
To uninstall
Right-click on the sheet’s tab at the bottom of the window and select Delete.
Setup
The sheet should automatically populate with your transaction and budget data. It assumes that your fiscal year ends on the last month in your Categories sheet. The end of your fiscal year can be set manually in the hidden columns past the right side of the sheet.
Usage
Click on the plus buttons above the line of column letters to expand the different sections.
Select month(s) to review in the Month section by checking the boxes above the months. Select month(s) plus a category or categories to review in the Transactions List section by checking the boxes to the left of the categories.
Permissions
Free for personal use. If you share this sheet, here or elsewhere, modified or not, please link back to this post.
Changelog
0.94 (2025-02-28)
Stops uncategorized transactions from appearing in the Transactions List when no category is selected.
0.93 (2025-02-27)
Adds option to display data by quarter.
Uses the last month on the Categories sheet as the end of the fiscal year; provide manual override.
Good work. Is it possible for the year-to-date to align with the fiscal year on the categories sheet, i.e. instead of 1/1/2025 to 12/31/25 to say, 2/01/25 to 3/31/26
I’ve uploaded an update to my shared sheet. The new version (0.93)
Assumes that the end of your fiscal year is the last month on your Categories sheet. @adekunledauda, the Year-To-Date view should now align with your fiscal year. Let me know if you encounter any problems.
Adds the option to summarize by quarters rather than months.
I have been using this budget review spreadsheet and I ADORE It! It is such a great tool so thank you so much for creating it!
I am in the process of creating my 2026 budget in categories and I thought it would automatically add 2026 in the budget review spreadsheet when I added the columns in the categories sheet and populated the budget, but it didn’t. I must be doing something wrong. Can you help me to get 2026 showing at the top of the budget review spreadsheet? Thank you so much!
It sounds as if you added columns for 2026 to the right side of your Categories sheet. The Budget Review sheet won’t show data for 2026 (budgets or actuals) until 2026. If that doesn’t answer your question, can you tell me a little more about what you’d like to see in the Budget Review sheet?
Oh my gosh! How silly of me! I thought it would show blank columns prior to the start of the year. That’s all I needed! Again, thank you for creating this awesome spreadsheet - it is my go-to sheet!!
I’m sorry you’re having trouble. I’m not sure what new sheet you created/copied. The Budget Review sheet doesn’t need to be re-created or copied for the new year. It should automatically pick up your 2026 budgets (from your Categories sheet) and actuals (from your Transactions sheet). If it can’t find 2026 budget data on your Categories sheet, it will show this error:
