I suspect there’s already info on this but I just can’t find it. I’m already using Tiller for Google Sheets, but would love to convert them to Excel. Is this possible, and if so, are there any guidelines for doing so?
Hi @wordsmithwest,
There isn’t a way to use an existing Google Sheet with Excel. If you downloaded the Google Sheet as an Excel the reports and dashboards would break as the formulas are a bit different between the two platforms.
Your best option if you really want to use Excel would be to start with the Excel Money Tracker template and then carefully copy/paste over your data from Google Sheets to Excel.
There aren’t as many template or tool options for Excel right now.
Note that excel is much harder to use vs sheets.
I’ve been using Sheets for over a year. After a disaster related to being trapped with Google Sheets requiring Google Drive (which may not be around forever) are there tips for converting since this very old topic was created? Can I copy and paste critical tabs to get the basics working in Excel?
@rgbaldwinjr Rick, yes you can copy and paste the critical tabs. It’s been awhile since I’ve moved data between Sheets and Excel (and Excel to Sheets).
Here is a basic help guide for Migrating your financial data between spreadsheets.
Some basic tips I can think of are:
Make sure you are working with the latest version of the Tiller templates
Review the help guide for getting started with a new Excel template
Make sure the column orders matches up. Column 1 in the transaction tab is used by one utility I use.
Copy and paste using the “Paste Values”
Be aware of hidden columns when or if you insert or change the order. Also, be aware of hidden tabs. The Balance History tab is hidden.
Create a copy of your Sheet template and back it up.
Verify your conversion. Check the monthly and yearly totals, number of transactions and balances.
