Credit Card Balance showing as positive instead of negative

On the balances sheet, 0ne of my credit cards shows a positive balance when it should be negative. (On the Transactions sheet, all is fine and debits show as debits… I recall reading somewhere how to fix that but have searched and cannot seem to find the solution. What is required to correct this issue? Thanks. Dave

Hi @davidmark:

On the Balances Tab, most routine credit card balances should appear as positive, but this is considered in the back-end formula where their sum increases your liabilities but reduces your net worth.

Clarifying…is it that you have a debit balance to report from this credit card (your charges are less than your refunds and payments) and that debit balance is not appearing as a negative?

Balances for all account types are absolute values so neither will show as positive or negative.

Hi Heather,

My balances sheet does show negatives for some credit cards but I just realized the accounts are actually in a credit position as my wife and I must have both paid! So, all is good.

Thanks,

Dave

Hi

I see this conversation is old, but I’m new to Tiller and am encountering a similar issue to this. I am tracking two credit cards, both currently owing money to the bank, yet the balance of one is showing as positive whilst that of the other is negative. I assume that positive is the correct convention when owing money to the bank, so why am I seeing a negative? I believe Yodlee uses screen scraping to collect data, could there be an issue with how they are parsing the data from the one bank? How does one rectify this?

Mike

Welcome to the community,

You can go into your accounts sheet and under the class override column select the correct designation of asset or liability and it will change the associated accounts balances to the opposite as intended.

Thanks Ben for your prompt reply and suggestion.

Prior to any intervention, both credit card accounts appeared on the Liabilities side of the Balance sheet.

Now having changed the Class Override column on the Accounts sheet to “Asset” for the credit card showing a negative balance, this has moved it across to the Asset side on the Balance sheet, dividing my grouping of “Credit Cards” between Assets and Liabilities. I guess accounting wise this makes sense, but it doesn’t make for a nice, clean visual representation of the logical grouping any longer. I feel like we are putting lipstick on a pig by doing this after the fact; is there no way of rectifying this at source?

Mike

If you believe the data is pulling in with the incorrect polarity, I’d recommend reaching out to our support team via the chat window in the lower right corner of the Console at https://my.tillerhq.com/ We can troubleshoot data quality issues with our data provider.

Ok, now I’m re-reviving this old thread. I understand the Balances tab situation but somewhere in my Tiller tabs, I want to get the correct balance of my credit card. If I have a credit there, I want to know that it’s a credit. If it’s a debit, I want to know it’s a debit. Right now, all I can find is a balance of $33. No mention of + or -. This is correct EXCEPT, it is a credit of $33 which is throwing off my calculations.

I have a sheet that I use for my credit card and for it to work correctly, I need to have an accurate + or - total. Is there a way to find that in all my Tiller data? Or a way to create it?

So I did some looking and asking a few other users about this issue. Due to the way the information comes in to the sheets and the way it is formatted (with absolute values), there are no templates or solutions set up that way. The only way to address the positive balance would be to do a temporary class override, changing the liability to an asset. From what you are saying, this is not a solution that would work for you. Have you tried the credit card settings sheet? That might work, but as I’ve never had a positive balance, I am not sure it would work either.

Right, changing it from liability to asset does not help my problem. At your suggestion, I did install that Credit Card Settings sheet. I’d never seen it before. It looks like it might work but right now, I’m getting a number for the balance that makes no sense. It’s not a number on my sheet, on the console or on the actual cc website. I’m going to track it for a day or two and see if I can noodle out what it is doing.

Thanks for much for the suggestion!

New News! I think it’s going to work! I did some long-needed clean up and then some tweaking and finally got the CC Settings balance to work correctly. It’s now showing a credit of $33.23 which is exactly what Chase says. So… I’m very hopeful that as soon as my balance is negative, that cell will give me my much desired minus sign!

Thanks, Christina! You not only answered my question but also got me a nice squeaky clean spreadsheet with everything working fine. Sweet!

Hello @susandennis ,

I am curious, what was the other credit card sheet you were using before?
Was it the account reconciliation solution?

The credit card settings sheets will require you to change the end date and payment date of your credit card in the template every month if it changes. Might or not be the case with your bank.

No, no. It was the same sheet - credit card settings. I had a bunch of old cards and it was reading an old one. I cleaned out the accounts and got rid of all the old stuff and then it found the right one. Oh and I had to tweak the hidden settings. Once I got it set up correctly, it gave me the correct balance.

I’m ok with a monthly update if necessary but all I really need is that balance so might not even need it.

Ok so I can confirm, the correct balance of a credit card never appears in Tiller. If it is a debt OR a credit, it comes in unlabeled. If I have a credit balance of 48.62, it shows 48.62 in Balance History. It’s converted to 49 on the Balances Tab. And shows 48.62 in the Credit Card Settings tab. And it is assumed that it is a -48.62. NOWHERE does it show that this is actually an overpayment - a credit.
