New categories not populating in Transactions tab

I added a few categories in the categories tab, but theu don’t show up in the drop down options in the Transaction tab. What can I do?

There are validations that may be constrained by its defined range which may now be lacking. Let’s see if I can demonstrate…

  1. Go to your Transactions sheet

  2. Click on the top row above the Category column to select the whole column

  3. From the Data menu, choose Data Validation. A pane will open on the right. Look for the rule that mentions the Category column letter (D in my case)

  4. Click on the rule, then look for the ‘Categories!’ range

  5. Yours may have something like Categories!$A$2:$A$XX (XX is some small number ) for the range. You can make the part after the colon, match the number of the last row in your Categories sheet e.g. Categories!$A$2:$A$33 or just make the range Categories!$A2:$A

  6. Click the Done button

This often happens if you add categories to the end of your list on the Categories tab. To avoid having to take the steps above to readjust the range in the future, I recommend inserting rows inside your category list so that you don’t add to either the top or the bottom, and then you’ll hopefully avoid this issue!
