I searched the forums to see if there was a easy solution to choose which accounts show on the Balances sheet. I have many accounts that have been closed for a while but they still show up on the Balance sheet. I know I could Hide the Account, but that affects other sheets. All I want is to to be able to choose which accounts I show on the Balances sheet without affecting any other sheets.
Simply copy the sheet into your workbook. Link is here.
It behaves identical to the current Balances sheet, but you now have the option to deselect accounts you don’t want to show Balances for. You do this in column AA…
By default, the sheet has all accounts checked to show, so if you don’t do anything after you copy into your workbook, all accounts will displayed just like the current Balances sheet.
Usage
Nothing else is needed.
Permissions
It is OK for others to copy, use, and modify this sheet.
Notes
This doesn’t affect any other Tiller sheets.
It would be great if the Tiller foundational Balances sheet was updated to include this capability. I can’t think of any downsides to doing this.
@randy or @heather - any chance to update the current Balance foundation sheet with this functionality? Could also add the ability to sort Accounts in a Group by Account name, balance or last updated.
Yes, I saw that. It’s pretty straight forward but didn’t want to alter the Accounts sheet. So I did it with the “Show” column option to the right on the Balances sheet, not Accounts. I then modified the formula in K3 and R3 to choose the right ones.
I stay away from changing the Foundation sheets (like Accounts) as I am concerned that if/when there are updates to these core Foundation sheets, I’ll have to add my customizations back in and I don’t want to keep track of this. Also, since all other sheets reference the Foundation sheets, I am paranoid about screwing some of those up (which it shouldn’t if they are coded correctly, but you never know). Maybe I’m too paranoid on this, but I have peace of mind!
Yes, that’s true! However, I view the Accounts, Transactions, and Balance History sheets as sacred and don’t modify those at all (but have messed with the Category sheet quite a bit- sorting, adding multiple years, etc. ).
@Cowboy13 thanks for the suggestion here. Not sure it’s something we’ll prioritize. I think given the Balances sheet and Accounts sheet are Tiller official templates it may be advised that this capability be built into other templates where you want to override the global “hide” setting on Accounts.
Your solution here gives folks an option for how to do this in the Balances sheet, but for a lot of people Balances is the only one they care about and therefore not a common denominator to need that template specifically having a special hidden override.
I just created a group called Z-History and put all of these accounts in that group. This way they all display together, and by calling it “z”, it sorts to the bottom. It’s not very elegant, but it’s simple - like me.
There’s also a simple way to modify the Net Worth sheet to still show accounts hidden from Balances. You only modify the Net Worth sheet so it avoids touching the Foundations templates.
