Rocket Mortgage is Blocking 3rd Party Account Access

Hey I just thought I would give everyone a heads up that I contacted Rocket Mortgage about the error that Yodlee was giving me when trying to refresh my mortgage account. I was getting the following during account refreshes:

“Rocket Mortgage access is blocked. We’re unable to add your account because this site is blocked. Please contact Rocket Mortgage’s customer support to fix.”

When I asked Rocket about it today, here’s what they said:

For the security of your loan and personal information, we have set it up were third parties are unable to log into your Rocket Mortgage site in order to obtain your mortgage information. It is advised to reach out to these parties to look into your options concerning the use of their apps moving forward.

So I guess that’s the end of that. I made sure to note my negative feedback at the hassle of manually updating account balances and transactions, and I would encourage others to do the same: ServicingHelp@rocketmortgage.com

Yeah, that answer from Rocket is horsesh*t. If they adopted Open Banking standards, your data would be as safe as it is on Rocket’s own site and you would have reliable access to your data.

My thinking is that they want to limit competition with their in-house offering Rocket Money. Hopefully their security standards apply across that as well. I have been suffering this blockage and also casually looking at other aggregation alternatives.

I moved to Tiller after Intuit ended Mint. I rarely had connection issues using Mint, and until a few weeks ago no long lasting issues with Tiller. Hopefully the issue with my main banking instution will get resolved.

I think it’s even simpler than that. Few things are as valuable to financial institutions as the data that they have about us, and they don’t want to give others, even their customers, access to that data for free.

I had Rocket before they sold my mortgage to Flagstar. Both companies use 2fa which require you to click on ‘Connection’, ‘Edit credentials’ and login in with user name and password and authenticate with a code. To only have to do this once a month is inconvenient but not the end if the world.

When I click on ‘Connection’, ‘Edit Crediential’ I get “Account Linking Unavailable” but can use the provided link to go to Rocket Mortgage just fine. My Rocket Mortgage has not updated for 24 days.

I’m getting the same thing.

I also reached out to Rocket Mortgage support on this. Their response:

“Please know that our technology no longer supports apps such as Tiller. Because of this, some function may not be available to you. If you are looking to us money management apps, you can download our Rocket Money app that will allow you to budge your finances. I do apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”

Leaving the typos aside, it’s pretty clear that they’re trying to push people to adopt their own tool and don’t want to interoperate with “competitors.” I find this distasteful, and disappointing in what has otherwise been a pretty good servicing company. I hope they change their policy, but at this point, it does seem like deliberate policy.

Yeah they can get bent.

Well, I am not going to make this political, but you might let your senators and representative know that Open Banking is important to you. There are folks in Congress who have been trying to mandate that banks make our data freely available to us to use on any platform we like. Unsurprisingly, many banks have been lobbying hard to prevent that from happening.

Done! Also, I have no problem telling potential clients of theirs how they are uncooperative with this issue. Time to start a campaign on different sites perhaps to rate them.

I’ve been ignoring this for a while, hoping it would correct itself. Upon seeing this, my first thought was to drop Tiller and find other software. But Tiller didn’t cause the problem, and I’ve been very happy with the spreadsheets.

Now I have to figure out how to manually add the Rocket data. :frowning:

Hi @hassenplug , have you already reviewed our guide on manual data import options?

I need to get up and cheer for Tiller. It is once again connecting to Rocket Mortgage!

Yeah!
