Hi, I’ve installed and setup the Savings & Debt sheet. It’s mostly working, but I can’t seem to figure out how to apply the existing portion of my savings balance to a particular goal. I see the “Unallocated Balance” in the “Savings Account Check” section but I’m not sure how to push some of that money into a goal?
Sorry for the delay here. Do you still need help with how to allocate existing savings?
If so, do you mind sharing a screenshot of what you’re seeing there? I am not super familiar with this community solution, but hoping a screenshot will help me point you in the right direction.
@heather I have this question as well. I have a rainy day fund savings account. I’ve budgeted $200 per month and transferred this amount over the past five months. So Tiller says I have $1000 available. I actually have $4000 in that account. How do I tell Tiller that the extra $3000 is “rainy day fund?”
@wendyraelynn: I started using Tiller about 3 months ago, and had a similar issue. I was coming into tiller with about $4k in a savings account that was not being reflected in my “Emergency Expense Fund”. The way to fix this is on the Savings Budget sheet. On there, make sure the adjust modifier in the top right is pointed to ‘Savings’.
Then, find your “Rainy Day Fund” in the list.
Add the amount that you want the account to have in the green field on the right. Now, run the tool from the Tiller Community Solutions extension. All Fixed!
The solution from @1Email2RuleThemAll is a great way to track virtual savings at the category level using the Savings Budget, @wendyraelynn. There are other ways, like using the Savings and Debt template, that are more account based.
Thank you @1Email2RuleThemAll! That is exactly what I needed.
Yes, @randy it’s the Savings and Debt template that I had an issue with. Sorry to not be more clear in my question.
I’m glad it worked for you! This is also what you would do if you wanted to add extra money to the savings goal just whenever. If you get an extra $100 that wasn’t budgeted, you can throw it into savings and use this trick to update the balance. I earn like 12 cents every few months on my savings account that ends up being unallocated to anything. I use this process to just add it to my Emergency fund.
When you hit the option to “Update Savings Budget”, it enters a line in the Budget Journal sheet (I believe it’s hidden by default). On that sheet, there’s a “Note” column. I like to go in there and add a little note just so I know what the line relates to if I ever need it.
