Tags, categories and groups

I just signed up for TIller and I’m trying to figure out the best strategy to organize my personal and business(es). Personal is easy. Rentals… in reading some of the other discussions show recommendations for a GROUP for each property with a unique set of CATEGORIES for each GROUP. But, I don’t see how you can put those under a LLC. Is that something you could do with a TAG? I just came across the TAG term and am not entirely clear what the best way is to use it. Then, I have a second standalone business that I just need to track separately from the personal and rental business. Just looking for the best way to set it up to get P&Ls for the business piece of things. Thanks.

Hi @Lesa ! I don’t have experience in this regard but thought to share this thread where other community members share their ideas and ways they use Tiller for their businesses. Perhaps there are some good insights there for your use case as well.

Jumping into this thread to ask my own question about tags and categories. Is my understanding correct?

  1. I can apply tags to individual transactions
  2. I can also associate tags with categories
  3. These two things are not related

Number 3 is what’s really doing my head in.

If I wanted to set it up so that, say, my Dog Care category had tags for walks, boarding, and dogsitting so that when I run my category rollup I can see how much I’ve spent on those three things and other untagged things, do I set up tags in Categories and also in Transactions? What happens if I tag a night out as dogsitting instead of entertainment?

Hi @Misha,

Transaction level tags work the same in Excel or Sheets. Category tags are only available in Sheets (as far as I know).

Answers to your questions:

  1. Yes - Transactions Sheet Columns

  2. Yes in Sheets only - Docs: Using Tags in the Categories sheet

  3. Correct, they are not related or tied together, simply two levels of tagging. If you incorrectly use the wrong tag you can simply change the tag.
