I know there was another post that had discussed it but the post and responses were dated about a year ago so I’m hoping there is an update. Is there a way to get access to the community templates or have this add on without the Broad Approval of being able to see, edit, change, and update all my sheets.
I understand that it won’t be used that way, however, since we are a small healthcare clinic we don’t have the option to approve that in order to maintain HIPAA compliancy.
We don’t have an additional Gmail we don’t care about using to only use for this. Creating one would be an inconvenience because all other accounting or clinic information can’t be shared with that account.
Is there a way that we can manually download the templates? I know we can add our own sheets and create our own customizations in the Foundation Sheets, please tell me there is an option of a library where we can just download the templates and incorporate them. It would save me time instead of having to recreate them.
We are aware that the broad “all spreadsheets” scope is an issue for some users. Our add-on roadmap includes a number of initiatives & changes to narrow the scopes needed to use Tiller’s tools and templates, including some research that is active presently. The truth is that these changes are non-trivial and will take time to roll out.
We are also investigating workflows that would allow for manual template insertion, but that workflow is not available at this time.
One approach you could try is to create a new spreadsheet (doesn’t need to be linked to a Tiller account) in a disposable or non-business Google account, install the needed templates into that spreadsheet, and then manually copy them into the business/restricted spreadsheet. This is essentially the manual-insertion process you are requesting with just and extra step for the in-between account.
Sorry we don’t offer a more seamless solution with restricted permissions at this time.

I’m wondering if there’s been any update to this. Is there a way to manually copy a community template now without giving the add-on broad permissions? Thanks.
We haven’t updated the permissions yet. It’s on our long term roadmap to move all these solutions to Tiller Money Feeds (still community-supported) but in one place and without the broad scopes but it’s a pretty large effort and there is a lot to do before we get there.
As far as manually copying in the spreadsheets, I’ll have to check in on whether we are open to sharing access to the sheet that holds all the production versions of these templates that the add-on basically pulls from. Will have to get back to you on that.
I also urge Tiller to reduce permission scope for the Community Solutions add-on. Thanks for considering.
I love Tiller, it is the best money tool, but it feels very dangerous to install this add-on and become vulnerable to losing a decade of Google Drive work.
This is also a complete dealbreaker for me and really prevents me from getting all the value from Tiller that I had hoped. It also keeps me from sharing the formulas and sheets that I’ve had to make in its place, since I’m not part of the “ecosystem.”
Unlike OP, I don’t have any organizational policies I need to follow (as I only use this personally) but I still wouldn’t consider giving out such broad permissions to something with such a narrowly scoped function.
I’m a software engineer with fairly serious experience in the security space, and this was a red flag that almost made me drop Tiller when I first tried it. A tool like Tiller requires an enormous amount of trust, and this kind of sloppiness with respect to security was a real confidence killer. While I may be an extreme case, most of the people I know who would appreciate Tiller are also the kind of people who would have a big problem granting this kind of access.
I’ve just quietly waited for the past couple years hoping that this would get fixed, and I’d bet there are more like me. So I finally figured I’d comment. Tiller is really fantastic, and I’d really like a way to “drop in” additional functionality without increasing my exposure to not only data exfiltration, but also data deletion, ransomware, etc.
Hear hear. Please consider this Tiller. A tool that has access to a user’s financial data should not also have permission scope to delete or abuse every file in that user’s Google Drive
+1 This is a dealbreaker for me, too, but I am absolutely interested in the functionality Tiller offers. It is hard to justify paying for a product when I can’t use all the features without risking the security of my Google Drive. Also, my Drive has shared folders and documents, so I’m not only risking MY data but also others who aren’t consenting to Tiller. Thank you for considering.
Thanks for your feedback here. Our long term goal is to move much of the functionality available in this add-on to our core product add-on, Tiller Money Feeds, that does not have such broad permissions, but we don’t have a timeline on when that will be completed.
In the meantime the best workaround we can offer is that you create a new Google account and share your Tiller sheets with that account and use that account to install Tiller Community Solutions. The Google user you use to install the Tiller Community Solutions add-on does not have to be the same Google user associated with your Tiller account or Tiller-powered Google Sheets. There won’t be other data in the drive for that account affected by these permissions.
