AutoCat not Filling All Columns

I created a rule for a Transaction and asked AutoCat to fill the Category, Tags, and Note columns as well as two other custom columns I added (they are Dropdown menus, like the Category column and indicate the status of a transaction for my own, personal tracking info–Paid, Pending, etc.). I have made sure the name of the Columns matches on both the Transaction and AutoCat sheets.

When AutoCat runs, the only columns that fills is the Category dropdown menu column. What else can I check that might be causing those other columns not to fill?

Thanks,
Mike

Most likely the AutoCat rule that you created is not actually matching and is not what is causing the category to be filled. If your transaction sheet has a Categorized By column, that will tell you what categorized the transaction. It could be that another AutoCat rule higher in AutoCat spreadsheet is categorizing the transaction.

It’s also possible that Description Matching or AI suggest are categorizing the transaction instead of your AutoCat rule, if those are enabled. But your AutoCat rules will take precedence over these.

You can find these settings on the Tiller console Transactions tab for each spreadsheet you have linked.

The other thing to consider is that if the transactions are already categorized and you’re trying to apply new updates/edits to the transaction using a rule like applying tags or notes those edits won’t be applied because AutoCat runs on only uncategorized transactions by default. You can use the “Run Rules on All” dropdown option next to Run AutoCat to have it run against all your transactions and apply the other edits if that’s the cause.

Thank you both. Mark, I will check the Categorized By column and see what I can discover. I haven’t got the Description Matching or AI enabled just yet, so I don’t think that’s it. I do have quite a bit of things on the AutoCat list, so my first guess, without looking yet, is your first guess, that there’s an earlier line item doing the lifting that I have missed.

Heather, thank you for your thought as well. I made sure it was uncategorized each time I tried to make some tweaks, so I’m fairly certain it wasn’t trying to overwrite an existing one.

I’ll check some things and report back.

Ok, found it. Mark, you were right. Earlier line item for that same item up above that I missed. Thanks! A good reminder to revisit that list from time to time and do some cleaning/updating.

Glad to hear you tracked it down @managetill :+1:

To help determine which AutoCat rule gets applied to a transaction, you could try this AutoCat ID idea.

Ah, excellent. Thanks again Mark!
