Clean up tiller after migrating from Quicken

Recently cancelled Quicken and now using Tiller full time. Use Excel and have several years of data downloaded from Tiller. I initially tried Tiller, quit, then returned, leaving some gaps in my data. Ultimately I would like to keep 3-5 years of transactions by moving older data to separate historical worksheet. I think (Big guess on my part), I understand how Tiller operates and have some questions to get things exactly as desired.

Questions:

  1. Can I simply copy any rows (transactions) from tiller template (sheets) to my excel transactions worksheet. Concerned about transactions and account ID’s.
  2. Want to completely remove the “Account Reconciliation” template for Excel. Other posts suggests some methods, just reviewing things to ensure my data integrity.
  3. Regarding adding older Quicken data. I understand ensuring items copied are pasted, values only. After adding data, do I need to populate transactions IDs/Account IDs. If yes, can you provide best procedure to handle.

Yes, you can copy paste (values only) transactions from Sheets to Excel. You’ll want to make sure your column order is the same, so you may want to move the Sheets columns to be in the order the Excel ones are in to make things easier. After you get the data into Excel, you might want to change the account names & #s if they are different in Excel than they were in Sheets.

You can just delete the “Account Reconciliation” sheet and the “Reconcile Date” column if you created it, it has no impact on anything else (unless you are using “Account Register” template which relies on Account Reconciliation).

Assuming the same accounts already exist in Excel that did in Quicken, I would just either copy the account name and number from a different transaction to the Quicken transaction, or if the names are unique enough, you could just do a find/replace on the sheet or column to do them all at once (the same process can be used on the Sheets data if it doesn’t exactly match the Excel accounts).

if you already have some of the existing data on the current accounts, you can also use the csv importer to batch check and upload. (mainly 'cause you can grab the account ID etc)

if they’re completely manual or deprecated account you just have to assign accounts on the back end if you want them pulled into all the budget and other worksheets

Thanks for much for your response. Confirms my suspicions and validates my understanding of the program. Can see why you have the “SuperUser” handle on your conversations.

Some followup.

  1. After adding older Quicken data, do I need to create Transaction and Account ID’s? Is there any criteria or format requirements for these data fields?

You don’t really need them. The only thing I’ve noticed that won’t work if you don’t have them is AutoCat won’t run on transactions that don’t have Transaction IDs. If they are already categorized, or you plan to do them manually, then it’s no worry. If you want to add your own, the key is they need to be unique. To avoid colliding with any that Tiller generates, you could start the ID with your initials, and then a random or sequential number (eg. jpf:00000001). I don’t think there’s any drawback to not having the Account ID, but if the account matches one that already exists, you can find the ID in another transaction or from the Account sheet and copy/paste it in.
