I’ve tried to find out how I can edit an existing AutoCat rule in Excel but no luck. I did find out how to do the edit rules in Google Sheets, but that’s not the product I rely on, so I’m hoping there’s an answer that doesn’t require a platform change.
Hello @stuart.ww , it should be the same for Excel and Google Sheets. There is an Autocat sheet with the rules. You can delete a row to remove the rule or edit the rule right on the sheet.

I created a NotebookLM with the entire help center pages. Here is how it answered the question:
You can absolutely edit existing AutoCat rules in Microsoft Excel without needing to switch platforms. AutoCat rules are stored and managed directly on the AutoCat sheet within your Tiller-powered Excel workbook.
To edit an existing AutoCat rule in Excel, you can directly modify the content on the AutoCat sheet, similar to how you would edit any other data in your spreadsheet:
-
Locate the AutoCat Sheet: First, open your Tiller-powered Excel workbook and navigate to the “AutoCat” sheet (which appears as a tab along the bottom of your workbook).
-
Modify Rule Criteria and Overrides: Each row on the AutoCat sheet represents a rule. You can directly edit the cells within a rule’s row to change its criteria (e.g., “Description Contains,” “Amount Min,” “Amount Max,” “Account Contains,” “Institution Contains”) or the value it applies as an override (e.g., “Category,” “Description,” “Tags,” “Note”). For instance, if you want to change the category applied by a rule, you would edit the “Category” cell for that specific rule on the AutoCat sheet.
-
Add or Delete Rules: You can delete entire rows from the AutoCat sheet to remove rules you no longer need. Similarly, you can add new rows and columns to create new rules or define additional filter criteria or override columns.
-
Rearrange Rule Order: AutoCat processes rules in a top-down order, meaning rules higher on the list are applied first. You can rearrange the order of your rules by clicking and holding a row number and dragging the row to a new position on the AutoCat sheet.
After making changes on the AutoCat sheet, you can then run AutoCat from the Tiller Money Feeds add-in sidebar to apply your updated rules to your transactions. You can also enable the “Auto Run on Fill” setting in AutoCat settings to have these rules automatically applied to newly added transactions when you fill your sheet.
Thanks! This is exactly what I needed. What I didn’t know is that the AutoCat sheet also stores Advanced Rule directives (I have added a “sub-category” column to my Transactions sheet and needed to edit that rule)/
The Google add-on has a few extra features that provide a user interface for new-rule creation. At this time, that is not available in the Excel add-in. As @TillerAlice notes, you can manually create and edit rules directly in the Autocat sheet using the established patterns.
We do have the advanced rule builder UI in Excel folks

Yup! Love the advanced builder. It was in the course of using it that I discovered a need to correct some of my newly created rules ![]()
