Manage money together: Introducing secondary users in Tiller

Originally published at: Manage Money Together: Introducing Secondary Users In Tiller - Tiller

Managing money is rarely a solo activity.

For many of us, it’s something we do alongside a partner, spouse, or a family member. Customers have always collaborated in their spreadsheets. Today, we’re superpowering that collaboration.

Built for real-life money conversations

We’ve heard from customers for years about the need to collaborate more easily in Tiller. Until now there was no ability to allow someone to fill the sheet for you, run AutoCat, or take advantage of all the features that Tiller and the Tiller Money Feeds add-on offer.

Secondary users are our answer to that.

With secondary users, you can invite someone you trust who isn’t already a Tiller user to join your Tiller account. Once they’ve accepted your invite they’ll have easy access to a refined set of Tiller-specific features so you can more easily work with your financial data together.

Secondary users will have access to many of the features in the Tiller Console as well as all of the features in the Tiller Money Feeds sidebar with their own login.

Whether you manage money jointly or just want another set of eyes on your numbers, this feature is about making collaboration feel natural — not complicated.

Designed with care (and your feedback)

This feature has been one of the most frequently requested over the years, and we wanted to get it right.

As with everything in Tiller, our goal wasn’t just to “add access,” but to do so in a way that:

  • respects trust and boundaries
  • supports different collaboration styles
  • fits naturally into how people already use their spreadsheets

We’re incredibly grateful to the customers who shared use cases, feedback, and patience as we worked toward this release. Your input helped shape what’s available today.

We’re excited to see how you use this to bring more clarity, alignment, and shared understanding to your financial life.

This is awesome, Heather! I’m really excited to be able to be more open about our household financial management.

Ha, two days after I write a Google Apps Script for my wife to manage manual transactions.

We’re not having much luck with the adding of a second user. After allowing the permissions request, the page is spinning at the “Joining account” step. When I look at the web console, there’s a bunch of 401 errors. I’ll open a ticket for this too.

Oops, looks like there’s a bigger issue since I can’t even open tickets. I’ll give it a try later, good luck with the fix!

Super excited about this feature! This is very big for me!

I have a few people I would love to help with their tiller spreadsheets.

From the articles you have provided, it is my understanding that someone can only add a secondary user by adding that secondary user’s email. If that email is already a secondary user on any other tiller accounts OR if that email is associated with a tiller account itself, then that email cannot be added as a secondary user correct?

I was wondering if a work around such a sub-addresses would be an appropriate. (aka using the “+” on an email). For example, say I want to help Jane, Joe and John and my personal email is “myemail@gmail.com”. Could I have them add me as a secondary user with the following emails:

  • “myemail+jane@gmail.com”
  • “myemail+joe@gmail.com”
  • “myemail+john@gmail.com”

Please let me know your thoughts on sub-addressing. Thanks!

Yep, it was a service interruption (unrelated to this feature being released, just bad timing!) Let me know if you still can’t get it working @ChrisMildebrandt

Yes, @kalob.devries this is correct.

I don’t think that the +email addresses will work either because after you’ve invited the user via email they have to log in via a Google or Microsoft account and I believe that is specific to the original email rather than the +email.

Is the service interruption sitll happened when i try to enter the secondary user at under https://my.tiller.com/settings?
it pops a network error message and then refreshes, tried on my phone too with same effect. (this is with a gmail account)

@ctlee I’m also seeing the latency when I try to load the console for my own account and other test accounts. I’ve reported to our engineers, and will update the service interruption thread.
