Introducing an easier, more modern Tiller Console

Over the past year, we’ve been making investments that quietly changed what’s possible with Tiller with two aggregators, secondary users, and recently Direct Fills for Google Sheets. Today’s release provides several powerful updates to the Tiller Console and a new way to experience Tiller.

What’s new

Navigation, layout, and design

The Tiller Console now offers a more modern look with easy access to all your linked spreadsheets, accounts, and Hello Money from a left side navigation. The focus is on your spreadsheets with quick access to open your spreadsheets, run AutoCat, and more.

Per-spreadsheet account management

Each Microsoft Excel and Google Sheet spreadsheet now has its own Linked Accounts view so you can see and manage the accounts connected to that spreadsheet. You can refresh accounts, manage links, and keep things organized without jumping around.

Account search and sorting

You can now search for accounts both within Linked Accounts and the all Accounts view. Use any criteria such as the last four digits, account name, institution, aggregator, and more. The new sorting feature gives you more flexibility for how your Connected Accounts are listed. The default is Oldest to Newest by Last Refresh, so those accounts that require a manual refresh always surface to the top of the list for easy access. You can also sort alphabetically. If you have many accounts, this will save you a lot of scrolling and searching for accounts that need your attention.

Mute accounts

Have a closed account you don’t want to delete or one that doesn’t refresh as frequently? You can now mute it. Muted accounts move to the bottom of your account list in their own section so they’re out of the way. Easy to unmute anytime.

Transactions view for Google Sheets

Access your transactions right in the browser if you’re using Direct Fills for Google Sheets. Use your Google Sheet the way you always have or check and update transactions from the Console even when you’re on-the-go. Easily search for transactions, Run AutoCat, or make edits. You can edit the description inline, select or update the category, and modify amounts too. Edits from the Console will write directly back to your Google Sheet so your source of truth is always in sync.

Mobile friendly

The new Console makes Tiller easier than ever to use on your phone. The Transactions view lets you quickly search for past transactions and easily categorize your data on the go. We know this has been a long-requested piece of the puzzle, especially for those of you who track your spending with a partner who, let’s say, isn’t exactly a spreadsheet enthusiast. Our new design keeps mobile in mind from the start.

If you want to easily access Tiller from your phone you can add it as a web app on your home screen. Follow the instructions for iOS or Android below. No app download required.

Curious where everything went?

We know this is a big shift in how you experience Tiller and the Console so we’ve put together this handy guide to help you understand where all the features you’re used to now live.

Check out the guide.

This is the start, not the finish line

We’re building toward a version of Tiller that works for more people, including those who’ve bounced off the spreadsheet-only approach. The work we’ve done on Direct Fills, the Console, and now mobile access is all pointing in the same direction: powerful financial tracking that meets you where you are.

More is coming. We’re excited about what’s next and we’ll keep you posted here.

What do you think?

As always, reply below with questions and feedback.

What features would you love to see next on the Console? What would make it even easier on your phone? After you’ve spent a week with it, what are you loving, and what still needs work?

Is it possible to add/create transactions from the Tiller console in the new update?

Not yet @colli756 But I expect in a future release that will be possible

Just had this come through and it fixed a lot of broken items I’ve been stressing about for the last couple months. Thanks!

I’m getting this error message when trying to view Transactions in the Tiller Console:
Could not load transactions
"account id" column is missing from Transactions sheet

I do like Tiller, but I’m not sure it will as valuable to me in the future

–very few new templates (why do you rely on a few “community” active users? Why not invest in creating some)
–excel users are an afterthought, not a priority

I recently had great success with Claude Design. I formatted a Tiller worksheet for use with powerbi, then used Claude design to create beautiful html dashboards.

@patatak take a look at the troubleshooting guidance here.

Thanks for your feedback @Observer - we recently published a blog about Excel v Google Sheets and why some things ship for Google Sheets first.

I appreciate that templates are important to you and hope we can invest more there in the future. We have invested a bit in that in the past with several that are “officially” supported, which you can find in the Tiller Money Feeds add-on/add-in.

Hooray! I love being able to see what was downloaded on the console screen. Good job! Also, deleting some old unused accounts is great.

I muted an account I closed but it does nothing in Foundation to remove from Balances?

@tjones4852 the mute feature is strictly for where the Account shows up on the Console.

If you’re using Google Sheets you can use the Data Cleanup tool to remove the data from your sheet for that account or manually clean it up in Excel.

With this new system, would it be possible to create a separate spreadsheet that is only linked to some (not all) of the bank feeds? I’m helping my 85 year old mother manager her accounts and would like to use Tiller, but I do not want all her transaction and balance data mixed in with mine.

Welcome @jeffbrustrom :waving_hand:

Great question! That has always been possible. Simply add her accounts (from the Accounts option on the left then click Add Accounts button top left) then click “Create spreadsheet” in the left menu and only link her accounts to the new sheet.

This is great!

I create a new spreadsheet every year. I would love the capability to not just create a new spreadsheet in the left-hand navigation but also to be able to link to my old spreadsheets there and not have them auto-fill. Is that a use case you’re considering?

Will home screen on iOS only work on Safari? I really only use Chrome.

Ryan

I hadn’t thought of that @Misha but it’s an interesting idea

@Ryan.Schmelz to get the Console to load as a web app on your phone you need to use the steps for Safari. Once you do it and open the “app” (it adds an icon to your home screen on your iPhone just like any other app) you won’t even notice that it’s in Safari, it will just look and behave like an app. No need to go through Chrome. I don’t think there is a way to do it via Chrome though anyway. There is mention of adding a “short cut” using Chrome, but it’s not the same as adding it as a web app.

I’ve been using Tiller for 7+ years and just want to say that Heather is the GOAT!

Wow! This is just great. Love the trx accessibility on my iPhone especially being able to add a cat or edit a description. Well done to everyone.

A post was split to a new topic: Confused about Sidebar Fills vs Direct Fills sheet

New features work quite well. I used this as an opportunity to create another data sheet for investments. It took me more than 2 hours to port the customizations I had and adjust all the rules, etc. I wish it was easier, but I can’t even formulate well what exactly should be improved :face_in_clouds:. In addition, that’s a rare operation. So I’d say it was a good update. :+1:
