Please Help: Update Balance on Manual account

Hi - simple (hopefully question)…

I just added a manual account in the Tiller Console and it correctly appears categorized as a “Manual account”. However, when I go to my spreadsheet and use Tiller to add a manual transaction, instead of seeing the Update balance in Balance History checkbox (which I understand should present itself for all manual accounts), I am seeing the Reconcile with Feeds dropdown (which I thought was only for accounts that Tiller pulls transactions for…

Can someone please help me resolve this?

Thank you!

Welcome @arpanandneil :waving_hand:

The “update balance history option” isn’t available for manual accounts created on the Tiller Console right now. That is a separate capability we intend to add later. You’ll need to visit the Tiller Console to update the balance. I suggest adding a feature request for this as that will help us gauge interest in how important is to port that feature over: https://community.tiller.com/c/feature-requests/15

The “reconcile with feeds” option can just stay unchecked/off since these won’t get reconciled via an automated transaction.

Hi @heather - thanks for responding to me.

I saw the following two links which specifically mention the “Update Balance in Balance History” and even show screenshots of it:

It looks like this was a community solution at some point, but now I’m not able to find it anywhere. Do you know if it still exists? It seems like a perfect way to handle the situation…

Thank you!
Neil

Checking in on this again @heather - did you have a chance to look at the two links I shared above?

The manual account features are only available either in Tiller Money Feeds and the Tiller Console, it’s no longer available via the Community Solutions add-on.

The “update balance history” option is available in Tiller Money Feeds ONLY if you create the manual account via the workflow IN Tiller Money Feeds (at this time).

We intend to offer the capability (to update the balance when a manual transaction is added), but just haven’t built that part out yet.

That totally makes sense - @heather - and I think I followed all the steps correctly and did create the manual account in Tiller money feeds. But I’m still not seeing this option. Do you know how I might fix it?

Hi @heather and Tiller team,

Earlier, I was getting confused with manual accounts added via the Tiller Feed and the Tiller Console. So I’m clear on my earlier questions. But now I’m still unclear on the following and hoping you can help:

  • Let’s say I add a manual account (Apple Cash account) through the Tiller Console and set its balance (e.g. $100)
  • I make a transaction (e.g. $25 given to a friend with Apple Cash) and I record the transaction manually using the Tiller Feed sidebar “add manual transaction”.
    • Question 1 - can I copy and paste a set of transactions directly into the Transactions tab of my Excel file, or is there an advantage to manually entering individual transactions using the sidebar?
  • After I gave my friend $25, my account balance is now $75 in real life. To reflect this in Tiller, it sounds like I need to go to the Tiller Console and choose the option to update my balance, and then manually put in $75. Is this correct?
    • Question 2 - will doing this update the Balance History tab in my Excel file?
    • Question 3 - is there an advantage to updating the balance in the Tiller Console as opposed to directly updating it in the Balance History tab of the Excel file?
  • Last question - let’s say I forget to manually update the balance, but I’ve correctly put in the $25 transaction. Now my transaction history is accurate but my account balance in Tiller is inaccurate.
    • Question 4 - Is there a way to make sure that my account balance is updated automatically based on making a manual transaction in Tiller? Is there a way to IDENTIFY when the two have fallen out of sync, resulting in an inaccurate account balance? This is important because let’s say my Account Balance is accurate (e.g. $75), but I never added the transaction to my transaction history. In that case, my budgets will be incorrect because it’ll seem like that $25 was never spent.

Thank you for bearing with me and answering my questions as I learn Tiller!

Just wanted to follow up on these questions @heather - looking forward to hearing from you and the team.

Not Heather or the team, but I can say that I copy/paste manual transactions all the time. My main bank isn’t connected, so my regular recurring transactions I just copy/paste. I do update all the info that goes into the tiller sheet and change the transaction ID (I just added a letter at the end that I change each month) The only disadvantage I see is the update balance doesn’t get done, so I update that with the tiller sidebar. I have not connected my manual accounts to the console as only maintain one spreadsheet that needs to be updated, so I don’t find value with that at this time. As far as the other questions about updating the balance, it might have to do with the tiller console to sheet connections, which again I am not using for manual accounts. One thing that I do however is use the Account register template and dependent sheets when I do update my accounts and then make sure I update my balance to reflect the current account register balance as appropriate.

Thank you @casilverthorn.96 ! That’s helpful context. And hopefully @heather or the Tiller team can provide more guidance on the other questions too

you can copy/paste transactions into the Transactions sheet, no problem. This is the best flow if you need to do more than one at a time (or a big batch).

Yes, this will update the balance history sheet on the next fill (assuming the account is linked to the sheet)

Yes, your balance will live in the database, not just in the sheet, so in the future you could fill it into a different spreadsheet.

No, once again, there is not a way to automatically update the balance for an account created on the Tiller Console when you add a manual transaction via the Tiller Money Feeds sidebar. There is not a way to identify when they’re out of sync other than maybe reviewing the last updated date on the Console against the date of the last transaction in your sheet.

Very comprehensive responses - thank you @heather !

The link you provided is not working. I am also frustrated that my School First bank not connecting and I called them. Waiting for management to help me connect my Tiller to my account

@samy98 sorry to hear about that. With respect to the link are you talking about feature requests? if so, are you seeing a “page can’t be found” error or similar?

If you meant SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union this remains on our outages list, meaning our data provider is already working on the connection. This may cause connection and data quality issues in the meantime. Read more about what to expect during outages here.
