Tags for Dummies

I recently found the tags capability and am disappointed I didn’t find it earlier. I kind of built my own tags functionality, but in the end, didn’t need to. I added the Tags Report, which automatically added a Tags column to my transaction sheet. Very cool pre-built solution. I’m never ceased to be amazed at what’s in this product.

Anyway, here’s my ask. For the life of me I can’t understand how category tags operate vs. transaction tags. The transaction tags make perfect sense to me, but I don’t get the category tags. Can someone explain it to me like I’m a 5th grader? If I use one type, do I not have to use the other? Thanks in advance!

Hello! If you’re using tags look at upgraded reports. There a are a few so you can find the one you like better.

I am not sure I entirely understand your question. I admit I don’t do a lot with tags; it is a goal for next year as I am changing some of my categories around. Did the link PCB provide give you what you need? If not, can you explain a little more what you are meaning by transaction tags vs category tags.

This is the way I use Category Tags.

On the Categories sheet, my col D is Tags. I have a Tag named Tax for tax-related Categories. In Tiller Community Solutions, there is a Report called Category Rollup Report which allows you to filter on a Category Tag. I run this report to collect relevant tax related transactions at tax time, sorted by Category.

I also use a Transaction Tag for each specific year on tax-related transactions - this year it is 2026 Tax Record (I also have 2025 Tax Record, 2024 Tax Record, etc).

The Tags Report pulls in the specific transactions and the Category Rollup Report sorts into the Categories. Both are useful to me.

I’m not sure how I discovered the Category Tags several years ago.

@martha.rudkin is right here @MelonCollie.

Tags on the Categories sheet are only useful if you’re using the Category Rollup Report available in the Tiller Community Solutions add-on.

They essentially group together ALL transactions within that category under the tag rather than needing to tag every single transaction individually. But that rollup report is the only thing that I’m aware actually leverages the category level tagging.

Hopefully that helps!

Thanks PCB. This is so cool. Exactly what I’m looking for to enhance my use of Tags. Thank you so much!!

Thank you Martha. As usual, an example tells the story. I think I now understand how the two work together. Very kind of you to respond.

Very helpful Heather. I wasn’t thinking about the Tags as they related to a report, but that’s the way I should have been thinking. Once I get that report, I’m sure it will all click into place. Thanks so much for taking the time to respond.
