What is going on with PayPal?

My ‘business’ account and my wife’s ‘personal’ account are both working.

@robertgranholm I’m seeing that there is a site alert for PayPal and it keeps getting reset. It’s ranging from “high failures” to “user action required” on their side. Every time they resolve and re-add an alert the start date gets reset on the Institution Alerts Dashboard, which we know probably seems misleading given it’s been months.

I’ll reach out to you via our support channel with something to try on this

Geez, OK so it’s possible for it work, I’ve had 6 months of no data here, I have contacted support, they point me to the dashboard, no real fixes…frustrating, I will just keep trying things. Thanks Heather for reaching out at least!

I had been using PayPal with 2FA via Google Authenticator and could only connect using Tiller once in a blue moon. The issue was/is never that Tiller would not prompt for the 2FA code. Indeed, it would prompt for the code, and I would supply it, but the “site not supported” error, or something similar, would eventually arise after waiting some 40-60 seconds for it to think. It can’t seem to check the code that is supplied.

Eventually, I disabled 2FA in PayPal, and Tiller seems to work consistently with PayPal, this way. It is unfortunate to have to compromise security to get Tiller to work with PayPal. I signed up for the multi-aggregator beta but never got accepted.

PayPal has not worked for me in about five months either. I have a business account and a personal account. Neither work. I do use a 2FA code to login that I get from a third-party authenticator app. It prompts me for the code but always fails. I may have to try turning off 2FA to see if that will work. The alerts dashboard said that PayPal was not supported the last time I looked so I assumed they had given up.

I synchronized PayPal with Tiller as recently today (without 2FA) so it will probably work if you disable 2FA. It is unfortunate, but unless you want to connect once or twice a year, that seems to be the only solution for Tiller compatibility.

I’ve been getting the “site not supported” error for months. Yesterday I did a Tiller refresh and confirmed that I still got the error. I disabled 2FA in my PayPal account and did another refresh, and it worked. I reenabled 2FA to be safe. Did the same today, same result. It’s super annoying to have to do this dance to download PayPal data, but at least I can get at it.

Potential future Tiller user here as I’m exploring options other than Personal Capital. Wanted to advise this recent- last several months- issue with PayPal is also impacting Personal Capital users. The difference is their customer support group is horrendous- it takes 1 week+ to get replies. In contrast, this community seems engaged and helpful from a cursory review of postings.

Per Case Study - Personal Capital, Personal Capital uses (used) Yodlee.

Tiller also uses Yodlee to get your data. Issues impacting Yodlee (such as this PayPal issue) affect all personal financial tracker sites using Yodlee.

Some personal financial tracker sites use more than one financial aggregator, such that you can use Yodlee or Plaid to get your data, in case one does not work with some institution.

Tiller has a yet-to-be-released version of their service which offers this multi-aggregator approach, but they have not shared a release date. There has been some test group for over a year now, and you can sign up for it, but I signed up on the first day and still have not gotten in, so it seems like it is a small bunch who have the luxury.

Yeah, this seems to be a Yodlee issue. Fwiw, I’ve used other financial management products that use Plaid as their aggregator and had similar challenges with PayPal. I think the issue is something about PayPal more than with any particular aggregator.

At least turning off 2FA is known to work. I think I’ll just turn it off long enough to fill my sheet periodically and then turn it back on. I don’t feel comfortable leaving it off all the time.

I think it’s all PayPal’s problem personally. Not sure what it is but it’s always been quirkier than the other connections I have.

FWIW, I have had the same problem for over 4 months, and turning off 2FA in PayPal doesn’t seem to work - in fact I get prompted still for a code when trying to Refresh PayPal in Tiller, which really seems counterintuitive (maybe there’s a lag before Yodlee knows?). I made sure I could log in without 2FA directly in PayPal, also tried logging out of Tiller and back in. No go. Time to go put my 2FA back. I’ll keep an eye on this thread in case a miracle occurs.

Looks like my “error” was not distinguishing between trusting my device and turning off 2FA entirely. Once I did the latter, it worked.

However, I still get prompted for a PIN sent to my phone during Tiller refresh - so either Yodlee or Tiller must be inserting that. Anyway, I can get along by turning off 2FA for a couple minutes, refreshing once every couple weeks, turning it back on. But sheesh…

I had the same experience. I never trust the device so it will always ask for the code, but I turned off 2FA in PayPal and immediately went to Tiller Console and clicked refresh on PayPal. It did send and ask for a code, but it worked this time. Took about a minute to think after I entered it but it refreshed! Not ideal, but doable.

As I’m not a frequent PayPal user- and typically when I do it’s to buy something which I charge to a credit card- I think I’ll just leave PayPal as a manual account and update if I should receive funds.

Tiller hasn’t been able to refresh either mine nor my wife’s paypal accounts for 3 months now, returning a technical error.

Same, it is back on the institution alerts dashboard – Institution Alerts - Google Sheets – with a “tentative ETA” of 7/16

Any ETA on a PayPal connection fix is a fantasy. It’s been inching along for years, yes really years I believe. Very frustrating. I just get a “site is blocked” message.

Anyone out there have a solution or workaround? I don’t think Tiller or Yodlee will ever fix this.

It is unfortunate that PayPal <> Yodlee can’t get it together. Honestly, I’m not sure that Plaid is any better, I know there is some weird behavior with the PayPal Mastercard and not all transactions being accessible, but for anyone who wants to give it a go you can try adding PayPal via Plaid to see if it’s any better at https://my.tiller.com/aggregators - note that we do not handle deduplicating accounts or transactions if you re-add the same institution/accounts via a different aggregator.

Fwiw, I was playing around with one of Tiller’s competitors over the weekend (Don’t fret. Not defecting. Just incessant curiousity. Tiller is still the best.) This competitor has Plaid, MX, and Finicity available as aggregators. I could not get PayPal working at all with any of them.
